Radiotherapy after effects

Hello all, I’ve just finished radiotherapy for BC. I’m already experiencing side effects, my boob is red and very tender. But the worst part for me is that my lumpectomy excision and lymph nodes scars are very red and sore. Is this normal?

Also I’m getting the odd sharp pains in my left breast, which is putting my mind into overdrive. I guess we never stop worrying that the dreaded ‘C’ will come back.

Any advice please, I have been moisturising twice daily.

  • Hi Valleyside

Sorry to hear that you experience side effects after radiotherapy.  While I don't know if it's normal to that your lumpectomy and lymph nodes scars are sore and red, it is normal to have the odd sharp pain in your breast as the nerves in your breast are settling down after the operation.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you Daisy for the reply. The tumour’s were in my right breast, but it’s the left breast that I’m also getting the twinges in. Just makes you worry that it’s in the other breast too x

  • Hi Valleyside.  I am not sure about your scars being red and sore.My treated breast was definitely sore and very pink. I had pains every now and again for quite a long time after. My breast nurse said this was normal and could continue for months. I am four months post radiotherapy and hardly get any discomfort now. My boob did feel a bit swollen but not uncomfortable so I booked some private sessions with a Lymphodeamia  nurse. It doesn’t mean I have lymphodeamia but after surgery the lymph nodes need a bit of help to drain.  As far as your other breast pain, it could be anything but I think we all feel every ache and twinge is the cancer returning. If you are really worried phone your breast nurse or gp. Hope it settles down.

  • Hello,

I totally understand your worries! I am in the midst of radiotherapy treatment but also get twinges in the remaining breast. Last month I was sent back a second mammogram as there were suspicions about my left breast. I remained calm through researching and finding out it is a really statistically low chance to get cancer in both breasts. One stat was 4-8% and lower than that with chemo and hormone therapy.

so I decided to remain calm and just think - how nice people are looking out for me. I want that! I won't let it worry me until they actually tell me I have something to get worried about. (My partner was terrified and I kept having to talk him down!)

I decided that if I did get it in both I better start playing the lottery as I am a statistically lucky lady!

it is a real journey to find that inner calm when experiencing all this body feedback as a result of treatment. I wish you all the best in that regard!

  • Thank you for the reply. It’s comforting to hear that there are others who have similar problems to mine after treatment. I google stuff but only ever seen to find the negative and not so much positive.

Hope all goes well for you on your journey xx

  • Hiya after I had radiotherapy my scars were red and sore....that was back in November and I recently started having a feeling of tightness in that breast, and I do randomly have stabbing pains too. Funnily enough I have also experienced some pains in my other breast.....I assumed it was in sympathy!!? All OK now

  • Thank you Chocolate Chip for your reply. It’s very reassuring that I’m not the only one that has experienced those symptoms.
I’m doing my best to try and ignore the twinges in the left breast and hope that it is only coming out in sympathy lol!! xx

  • Hi all

I have suffered more since radiotherapy finished last June. I have told consultant about pain in left breast since finishing radiotherapy. I had mastectomy on right side. After a  couple of months months I suffered pain, tightness etc and some left side pain. Consultant examined me and said left side feels fine. All came at the time I started taking Letrozole which I am told thins your breast tissue? So could be coincidence all came at once. I have been referred for soft tissue and scar massage as my soft tissue had stuck to my chest wall in places caused by the radiotherapy. It has really helped and much more comfortable. I have a bit of nerve damage from node clearance but would recommend this massage.

This roller coaster continues even after active treatment finished.onwrds and upwards ladies .
