I’ve been prescribed Tomoxifen but I’m so nervous about taking it because of the horror stories I’ve heard and read about. I honestly don’t know what to do. My breast cancer nurse has spoken to me but I’m not convinced. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there,
I took tamoxifen for 4 years, once I got used to some side effects which were not to bad I was ok...
Hi MozB
I've been on tamoxifen for about a year now and apart from some hot flushes at night for first few months I have no problem taking it. I do find that I get on with a certain brand better than others.
I know we are all different but people only tend to write about the bad reactions but there are lots of us who tolerate it well.
Hope this helps, good luck.
Carolyn
Hi
i was like you. Really worried because of the scare stories I’ve read. I thought I’d try it for 3 months and see how I go. I’m now on 6 months.
I have some joint pain - managed well with regular naproxen. Feel hot at the start of the night. Some vaginal dryness but it’s only for a few days of the month not all the time. sex drive reduced a bit but I think chemo did that so not sure if that’s a side effect of tamoxifen or still recovering from chemo. I’m also having 4 weekly Zoladex injections which started at the same time so not sure if the side effects are caused by tamoxifen or injection or a combination of both.
on the plus side… no periods is great and my skin is fabulous. No more breakouts!
I’m due to start another treatment soon and I’m feeling anxious about that and side effects but I’m going in with the same mindset - give it 3 months and see how I get on.
Ultimately it is your choice. You can always stop it or change it if it doesn’t agree with you. Everyone is different and everyone reacts different.
Hope this helps
Hi MozB, I haven’t started tamoxifen yet, it is on my plan but I’m still having chemo. I too have read some horror stories, however I am sure there are lots of people out there who take and and don’t really have much in the way of side effect but they don’t always post. We are all so different and we never really know how we will react until we start taking it.
Wishing you all the best and minimal side effects.
