Zoledronic acid

Hi just wondering if anyone has refused Zoledronic acid treatment. I'm really concerned about the side effects mainly issues with the jaw ONJ. I've had gum disease in my lower jaw and it seems like too much of a risk for me.

  • Hi   I didn’t refuse and finished the infusions last Dec . I went to Dentist prior to treatment for check up and discussion and for me I decided the risk of jaw problems were quite low as long as I kept alert to possible problems and attended dentist if Necessary . For me at my age the risk of weakened bones and risk of secondary felt greater .

I had also had gum disease prior but ZA did not aggravate it . I did lose a filling but rang onco then she delayed the infusion and I went to dentist who was able to fill with no drilling involved .

I believe the problems are more likely to occur if you have invasive dental treatment with possible cuts to gums .

We are all different in how our bodies react to certain treatments and hopefully some more info will be posted for you. Also discuss with your dentist until you are happy with your decision .
     Hope this helps

  • I worried about side effects too but have had virtually none. I have had a root canal and crown since being on it with no issues (chemo not that good for your teeth!).

I was told to see my dentist ahead of starting to make sure no underlying or brewing issues. Your dentist will be able to give you a view on whether the gum disease is an issue. My understanding is that surgery into the jaw is the risk factor, so having a tooth extract for example.

My dentist has been amazing at seeing me for regular check ups and they always fit me in quicky if I have any concerns as I remind them I'm having zoledronic acid treatment.

  • Thanks for your reply.

I'm just over halfway through chemo my gums are sore and I might need a tooth out this is why I'm concerned.

  • You may be able to start the ZA later - after the tooth extraction has fully healed.
