I’m due to start Chemo shortly 2 types of medication over 18 weeks.

I’m thinking of taking control and cutting my hair short before I start and buying a wig…..

As I understand I can get one from the NHS…..

Also what should I expect? I know we are all different.

Any advice?

Thank you……

  • Hi,

I lost my hair 14 days after first chemotherapy.  Came out in clumps so cut to a number 4 and then it all came our apart from a few strands here and there.  It felt a lot better short hair coming out than ot did when long clumps were coming out so I think it does help to take control and cut it.  I wish I had done it sooner!  Yes you do get a wig on the NHS I think it depends on area how it works.. i got a 150 voucher value to get s wig with from the provider nhs referred me too.

  • My Chemo starts in April. I have mentally decided, that if my hair starts to fall out,I will take control and shave it off.  Some of the head scarfs look good and I thi k they will be cooler  But this is a journey. Good luck and stay positive

  • I decided to donate it to little princess charity as soon as it started to fall out (around day 14) so something good could come of it. Big joy in  taking control and really enjoyed a week or so with a fab buzz cut that thinned gradually.  Gone for beenies and a wig for when I fancy looking more like myself. Its not great watching your hair fall out but shorter was better and felt less dramatic for me personally. You might be able to try scalp cooling to keep your hair which I dont know a lot about as I didnt research it. Good luck. xx

  • Hi,

I had 2 different chemo meds over 18 weeks too and was told I would lose my hair. It was quite long so I had it cut to an above shoulder bob, I used a cold cap at every treatment and didn’t completely lose my hair, it slowly thinned and I had it cut again half way through treatment to a shorter bob. My hair actually started growing back before I finished treatment! When I finished treatment my hair was what I thought really thin but people didn’t really notice! I had it cut short in the end so all you could see was the new growth. Quite a journey but at no point was I bald! I did get a wig but never used it.

  • Hi   I was on EC x 6 and was told. Would def lose hair so I had it cut to pixie style from bob . I then went wig app which was held at my hospital . Had loads of fun trying  all the wigs on  . Then chose one in pixie style . I used NHS voucher so no cost .
To be honest I hardly wore it only on 2/3 occasions when I didn’t want my bald head to detract from what was happening .
I did have a selection of hats and headbands and it was winter but if I was indoors I just braved the bald look .

chemo started hair starting to thin                                                  Wig

( it was stubborn and stayed a while )

pretending I was 21 again ..it went back in box lol

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • Hi

My hair went very quickly but I had hats and a wig at the ready. Like you it was winter time (last year) so not too hot. By the heatwave last summer saw my treatment end and ditched the wig hair appearing  but wasn't prepared for curls

Heart Joyy️ou will get there x me in my wig second pic me now

  • I once tried a long blonde one on, my husband liked it. My hair is becoming more gray and thinning out, not from chemo. Stress maybe. Might get one again for occasional use. You got to keep your head warm. Some great turbans around. X

  • Hi pecans

I started losing my hair on my second round so decided to take control and shave it off.

it has now grown back but I did get quite addicted to wearing wigs and still do now . I have long , short, pink , blonde and brown.

The last photo is my biological hair the rest are wigs. I used to have long hair but I quite like it short now but I would never of had the courage to cut it if this hadn't of happend.

Good luck with your treatment x

  • I cut my hair before chemo and sewed some onto a headscarf and cap to give a fringe and bit at the back.

  • Hi, I lost my hair after the second session of chemo. I got a wig from Going for Bust, I had to give a donation but it was good to go to try on a range of different styles and colours. I would advise to take your time, and if possible take someone you trust to tell you the truth with you.

I would also suggest looking at reviews before buying wigs online, as I got caught with one online purchase which was very poor quality. I did eventually get my money back, but if I had looked at the reviews first I would have known not to buy from them and saved myself a lot of hassle.

I bought a fringe wig too which I often wear with hats when it is wet or windy, so very pleased with that purchase.

Good luck with your wig shopping, I’m sure you’ll find the right one for you.
