I posted this last night but it seems to have been deleted.
started Abemaciclib 14 days ago. Made my 2 weekly blood test appointments 2 weeks ago first one due 9.15 this morning. Surgery rang me at 4.18 last night to say they don’t have the form from the hospital so will have to cancel my blood test. I tried ringing the hospital but only got answerphones as they finish at 4. I asked gp surgery if I could delay my appointment til later in the morning while I get in touch with the hospital first thing they said no it’s fully booked and to rebook but not anything til the week after next. Without knowing what my white blood cells are doing I’m considering coming off the drug. I’m so stressed and upset that I’ve not slept all night. My first blood test is messed up and I don’t know what to do. Any advice please ?
My gp was the same but they are obliged and obligated to prioritise certain ps and guess what, pts on chemo are one of those pts. So visit surgery and talk to them they should then give you all of your appts they only can do it within 3 weeks they are unable to see after that. But on your blood letting appt rebook then and there
I’ve been reduced to tears again this evening after phoning go receptionist. I asked her vet politely to change my future appoints from a Friday to the Thursday. She knew exactly why and good idea and will you make sure we have the form for each one. I said the hospital told me it’s now on the ice system. She replied in an awful manner “well it’s not so you need to contact them”. I said is it my responsibility to do this and she said yes it’s your job to make sure we have the forms. I said how will I know you havnt got the forms. She said then you’ll have to phone us and ask. Her tone was awful so I told her I expected more empathy, and I’m struggling with stress over this but she just repeated we have to have the forms. I said I’m going to report this to the practise manager and she said “you do that”. I’m new to this practise and I’ve never been spoken to like this by any other practise. I have to complain as I can’t cope with this attitude every time I need to book bloods during the next two years. I’m so upset I’ve nit eaten a thing today, no sleep last night and can’t stop crying.
I’ve had the opposite reaction from the hospital they were so helpful and relayed my problem to my oncologist. She asked them to make an appointment for Monday with her and she will organise the bloods at the same time. She wants to see me as she wants to know how I am. What a difference.
You poor thing. This is absolutely not acceptable behaviour. Im sorry but she should not be working on the frontline with this attitude. Yes you must make a complaint, surely the GPs cannot be happy with this person representing their surgery. I don’t know what it is about certain receptionists, they seem to grow horns. I have a lot of sympathy for receptionists as I worked as one for many years but I would never treat anyone the way you have been treated. Try not to get too upset. Just feel sorry for this person because she must have quite a miserable life. Happy people don’t behave like this and I always say, if you don’t like people then don’t do a job where you have to be front of house. Get yourself a comforting drink, snuggle up on the sofa and watch something nice on the tv.
That's disgusting. Copy in PALS https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/hospitals/what-is-pals-patient-advice-and-liaison-service/ to your complaint. I complained about a different matter to my surgery as practice manager not returning calls. So I emailed, no response. Contacted PALS and response in a week and my records up dated - there was issue with known allergies in my records and they prescribed a drug I've been allergic to for almost 20 years. They denied in my records but I had screenshots of my health online app showing it.
The receptionists think it's their role to protect the GP. I've had things like this before, I told them it wasn't very good practice. Ask to speak to the duty Doctor if getting nowhere. I put a formal complaint in about something to do with my son. Im not very demanding but when you need them, getting through the system is hard. Their is a glitch somewhere if the form should have gone and it didn't arrive. Maybe they should give you the form in your hand. Hope you are feeling better. Xxx
This is horrible. You need to speak to someone either the practice manager or senior GP. My practice were the opposite of what you describe l can't imagine anyone being this bad but maybe something bad is happening to her and affecting her performance. Ask your chemo or breast nurse if they would contact the surgery and or if you have a nearby Macmillan centre drop in there and ask them for help. When you are ill you sometimes need an advocate. If you go into the surgery take a relative or friend to speak for you.
As I recall I had my blood tests done in the hospital and the form was so marked that it was clear they needed to be done within a certain window. I avoided the GP phlebotomy service because they could never find a suitable vein but it was all pleasant and supportive. Hopefully things will improve. It is a difficult journey but out comes are mostly very positive. Thinking of you xx
Thank you, I’m so pleased to have the support of this forum. I might ask my oncologist on Monday if I can have all my bloods done at the hospital. I’d rather travel 40 minutes each way to the hospital.than walk 10 minutes to the local gp practise after this episode with them.
