I was feeling quite positive today after seeing the consultant yesterday as I have 2 areas that need to be removed he thinks a mastectomy is best. I am 43. I asked about chemo and radiotherapy he doesn't think I will need them but will need to take tablets he didn't say what so I have been looking into this and now I am getting worried about side effects even though I don't know what the tablets will be I am pre menopausal. I have gone from feeling positive to very worried.

  • Hi Mezza. Don’t be worried. Someone on here said that those people who don’t have any problem with Hormone Therapy tablets don’t tend to post so don’t feel that you will definitely get side effects.  Just give the tablets a try and see how you get on. I’m assuming the tablets will be HT.Great news that you don’t need chemo or radiotherapy.

  • Thank you for your reply I do think I do over think things so Thank you much appreciated.

  • It’s the not knowing that plays on your mind I’ve found.  If it’s hormone therapy you will have then I can tell you that I’ve been on them for ; months now and apart from a few aches in my hips after sitting was all I had.  It eased after a few steps but it only lasted about a month and now I don’t have any side effects from it at all.  I wish you well with your treatment. • Thank you that's helpful. it is the unknown thats hard.  I had my 1st biospy in Oct and I had another 2 since and the waiting for results was hard so yesterday when I had my results I thought at least I know but I still feel in limbo. I wish you well too x

  • When is your mastectomy planned for and will you opt for reconstruction.   I had two operations to get cleared and still needed a mastectomy in the end. I had that in 1st November ‘22.  I had radiotherapy after and no chemo.  I’m going flat, but it’s a personal choice and there’s no right or wrong to this in my opinion, it’s up to the individual.  Anyway, the mastectomy was a breeze compared to the two previous breast conserving operations.   I hope you have the same experience with your mastectomy.   If you have any concerns, remember you can phone your breast care nurse and I’m sure she will put your mind at rest.  Of course I will be happy to answer any questions you want to ask about my mastectomy experience.   M x

  • I saw the consultant yesterday and he said I can have a reconstruction I have the booklet I looked through but I am undecided. The consultant is passing me on to someone else he said I will get appointment in about 2 weeks so will know more then I haven't got a date for op yet. I have got number for breast nurses. Thank you for your help that is helpful and reassuring. x

  • If it helps in your decision making.  Although I told them I didn’t want reconstruction, the oncologist told me I have up to 2 years after mastectomy to change my mind.  Decisions are very difficult but as my oncologist told me with every choice she gave me “go with your first gut feeling”.  Take care x

  • I saw my new consultant today I was clear in my head to have reconstruction with implant but after hearing pros and cons I am now unsure. I have appointment next week to tell them my decision I am also going to phone breast nurse tomorrow. they want to operate on my good breast to lift it to match other side and also I didn't know the implant could also cause cancer. such a big decision. I thought I was going today for them to tell me what they were going to do. I know there isn't a right or wrong way. but just wanted to views. thank you x
