Hello all

I am about to start my 1st 7 day course of Filgrastim injections and wondered if there was any advise about taking the drugs and side effects people have experienced?

I have no issue with injecting myself, but any tints to prevent brusing would be appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hi Klee65

I had to do these injections last year when having chemo.

All I would say is go in at an angle not straight . I had no bruising. The bone pain can be acute as this injection is forcing your bone marrow to make more white blood cells. Back and sternum are the main areas. It's doable and we are all different. good luck

  • I didn't get any side effects from filgrastim, but some people do get pain,

  • I got terrible leg pain first time - baths helped and massage. Less pain each time. There was a plus - I felt better with each injection

  • Pinch up some flesh and put the needle in at a 45 degree angle. I found they made my bones ache a lot, particularly anywhere with osteoarthritis. Ibuprofen helped. I found taking them late afternoon meant the worst aching was whilst I was in bed. I only had 5 days at a time but the first couple of days were the worst. It got a bit better with each cycle.

  • My advice would be ; Take them out of the fridge at around half hour before you inject them, inject around the stomach, at an angle and at least two inches from your belly button. Taking loratadine can help with the side effects, expect to ache. I was given 7 initially but reduced to 5 a cycle because of the bone aches and headaches, my white blood cells held up ok, if you find you are one of us who do suffer consider that reduced dose, all the best x

  • Thank you Anna12345.

Feeling really rough this morning, which is ashame and was coping with Chemo drugs.

Felt really nauseous in the night. Finally took znti sickness tablet at 6.30am. My knees are so sore today.

Drinking Ginger and Lemon tea as my sense of taste took a holiday yesterday....

Have a diary so systems noted to be passes on.

Like you I have been given 7 day of injections.  Finger crossed the systems reduce over the days as some of the other lovely people who responded imply.

  • Hi

I started my first chemo on 9th Jan - Docetaxel/carboplatin plus phesgo injection to deliver her2 meds (tratuzumab/pertuzumab) with the added filgrastrim injections.

The January 23 chemo starters thread has been a lovely place to get support during this time if you want to pop over there, you will be very welcome.

I’m day 11 post-first infusion. Today is the first time water has not been foul so taste is now recovering.

I found the injections gave me a lot of bone pain & took a daily clarityn as I read that anti-histamine can help, as well as the usual paracetamol/ibuprofen. The injections themselves were ok but I didn’t enjoy the after effects at all & am going to ask about dose reducing when I see my Dr next week.

I found days 3-7 the worst & was really poleaxed & pretty much bed bound during those days. I felt like I had aged 40 years overnight. It was not nice, but I think if I had managed to eat & drink more it would have helped as I took very little in during those days.

    Xx

  • Paracetamol before and loratidine can help with aches. You will soon be expert with these injections.

  • It is horrible when you feel so rough, days I’m very pleased are behind me now. I was told to take the anti sickness beds the day I finished taking the dex if I felt sick or not! I did that and it was helpful, it’s easier not to feel sick at all than to try and stop the nausea when it’s started. Hope you’re feeling as best as can be expected, hang in there, every day you manage is a day closer to it being over xx

  • Can anybody who has been on Filgrastim report any long term effects or long term damage caused by the drugs? I am worried as after 5 injections I am experiencing strong throbbing bone pain. I am wondering if anybody can tell me if their bone health returned to normal after the treatments?
