Hi, today it's all hit home to me, the reality of this cancer.
I really need some advice to help me with my fears and anxiety.
I'm due to have surgery on Monday. It will be a mastectomy with reconstruction and sentinel node biopsy. This will be via a DIEP flap reconstruction.
Has anyone any experience of this or any comforting words to help me through these next few days?
Thank you
Hi and am sorry to hear of your upcoming op. Feeling scared is completely natural. I was diagnosed in October and had a bilateral therapeutic mammoplasty with lymph node removal under both arms. I will be five weeks post op on Thursday. Try to take a day, an hour, a moment at a time. It does get easier but sometimes it creeps up on you. There is much on your journey that you cannot necessarily control other than knowing that you are a step closer to the end of this journey. I feel like I am on a rollercoaster that isn't stopping.
The pain from the operation was not too bad. Try and do your physio as that really does help. Don't feel like you can't ask questions even if they seem silly as it is important to you to know.
I wish you lots of luck on Monday. Deep breath. Big girl pants - you got this. One step at a time. xx
HI Helenp,
Thank so much for your supportive words and sharing your own experience with me. It all became real today and the tears just wouldn't stop. I'll take on board your advice and hope tomorrow is a better day. I have a few more days to talk to my support nurse about my diagnosis again just to clarify and absorb the information. Wishing you well xx
Thanks for responding and sharing your experience and supportive wo
You’re bound to feel extremely anxious before surgery. I think it’s good to let yourself feel all the emotions - cry with a friend, scream from a hilltop, hurl stones into the sea. If you get a chance, try to spend time on self-care, maybe try meditation or yoga to calm your mind, take yourself to the cinema or anything that you enjoy doing. It’s a lot to get your head around. It might also be helpful to call Macmillan and talk it through with a nurse.
I had a double mastectomy with diep in October. It’s a big surgery and it’s taken a long time to recover but I’m so pleased with the results. You’ll receive excellent care from the health care team, across surgeons, nurses, physio and support staff, you just need to turn up and do what they advise.
It’s useful to rally your friends and family around you while you recover, ask people to drop off meals, do your cleaning, take you to appointments etc.
All the best xx
Hello, I'm so glad to hear you are doing well and you are happy with your surgery.
Thank you so much for your reply it's helped me feel a little calmer. Hopefully, I'll have a successful surgery too. I can't fault the care I'm currently receiving with the NHS x
It’s such a rollercoaster, but as the other ladies say go with every emotion - they are all completely normal. Being anxious is horrid but it’s how you feel, how we all feel. Fresh air and walking helps me, deep breaths and looking at the trees..take time for you. Be kind to yourself and wishing you all the best, hugs Fxx
Thank you I really appreciate the message of how you manage your emotions. Today is a good day
