Hi, has anyone had a psychological assessment prior to being allowed a bilateral mastectomy?

Just wondering what to expect.

  • HI

I can't answer your question - sorry, but I'm replying to get your post back to the first page, just in case someone's around who has had one.

    Best wishes, Lesley

  • Hi, I had my second mastectomy two weeks ago. This was for symmetry. My first mastectomy was June 2021. When I asked the BCN about it, she said that I would have an appointment with my surgeon to discuss. I was not referred to a psychologist. I told her the truth .. I found it really odd having one breast, and felt very self conscious. I don’t wear a bra most of the time, and so it instantly drew attention to my single mastectomy. I had to wait 5 months for my second mastectomy - completely understandable as quite rightly, cancer patients will always be prioritised. My surgery was offered after a very late cancellation - just 48 hours before the actual day!! I had my follow up appointment today, and told her I was very grateful, my only regret was not having it done sooner. Now I just look flat chested, but that’s fine, as most of the clothes I wear don’t really draw attention to this. I asked her if she would have done a bilateral had I asked at the beginning. She said that the answer was not 100% no, but it was unlikely. There was a clinical reason for this - and that concerns complications. Do you risk complications on healthy tissue? Diseased tissue, yes of course. I had 5 months chemo before surgery, and my surgery was one week after my chemo cycle. So I guess I was immunocompromised, my skin (and all cells really) had been affected by chemo, and 8 weeks later I was booked in for radio therapy. So I understood what she was saying.
I know that I haven’t answered your question, but that was my experience. X
