Hello, I had surgery 3 days ago for DCIS and I’m struggling to find a comfortable position to sleep. I keep waking myself up with sharp pains as I must be catching myself, putting my arm in the wrong place or something… does anyone as any tips please ? I could really do with some sleep, I’m exhausted. Thank you

  • Hi Mano, sorry to hear you are having trouble sleeping. I slept sitting more upright with pillows to prop me up. This way my arms were either resting in my lap or just resting in the bed. I had a pillow up my arm just to bring it up a little bit on the operated side.  I also found it comfortable sleeping in a similar position on the sofa snuggling into the corner with cushions and pillows to prop me up.
I have heard some people use v shaped pillows to help but I haven’t tried those.
Wishing you all the best on your journey.

  • I used a v shape pillow as a base then piled up mor pillows so I was leaning into the v and my arms were both up on pillows.  The worst pain I had was one night when I threw my arms above my head in my sleep - that woke me up pretty quick!! You’re probably moving in your sleep - as you heal you’ll wake less. It’s hard not to roll over from side to side.  I also found trying to keep going until I was really tired in the evening helped me get off soundly.  I also turfed my other half out the bed for the first week so I could build up a big pile of pillows to keep that v shape built up.  Hope you get some sleep soon.  Don’t forget to do the exercises regularly too - they help keep your arm and shoulder moving and prevent spasms

  • Hi Mano, I have slept on my back since my operation, seems I've gotten used to it.  I slept in my bra for months and made a V with the pillows and slept slightly elevated.  Are you still doing your arm exercises?  I also find I am awake quite late too, tired but can't sleep.

  • Hi Mano, I too recently had surgery on both breasts. Still recovering. I sleep with two pillows in an almost upright position. Normally, I sleep on my side and never on my stomach. In the beginning it was difficult at first but getting use to it. If I've had a bad night I try to get some sleep on the sofa in the day with a footstool to support my legs. Slowly, and surely you will get more comfortable.

  • Hello Mano,

I'm 5 wks post op for same condition. I can't sleep on my back. I padded my arm up with different size cushions and a pillow. I used the pain killers esp before bedtime and paracetamol in the night. What they gave me didn't suit me it dropped my BP too much I felt faint and sick. As the swelling and bruising went down it got easier. Resting and gently doing the exercises all helped. Hope you got some sleep last night. X

  • Thank you everyone for your advices. I did managed a few hours sleep thanks to “hugging” a big pillow and sleeping on my side. I feel better for it. I probably need something behind my back too,as  I woke myself up rolling off. Try & error, but getting there. Thank you Ladies for your support xx
