Closed suction drain worries!

I had a single mastectomy yesterday and have a drain in. I'm just concerned as the fluid doesn't seem to all be draining into the bulb and is staying in the tube. I've emptied it collected 50ml since yesterday, but there is more in the tube. Anyone got any experience of this? It's the weekend and breast care centre is shut. Thanks xx

  • Hi, I think that sounds normal, I always had fluid in the tube, the main thing is that it is flowing through to the bulb.

Try not to worry, sounds like you are doing well, it's a lot to cope with. I hope you make a good recovery

  • Hi Eelpie, sorry to hear about your drain tube. When I had my drain in I did find it sometimes very slow to drain into the bulb. I had a vacuum drain and had to undo clips and do them back up after squeezing the bulb. My tube was long and when I was sitting I would allow the blood bag and bulb to go to the floor to allow the tube to flow downwards which did help the blood to drain slowly into the bulb. It might be worth having a chat to the online Macmillan nurses otherwise, they maybe able to offer some advice or give you a contact number to be able to call someone to discuss.

  • Thanks cuffcake, I tried that today and was draining much better. I'm less panicked now! Hugs back Eelpie
