Losing my fingernails!

Any advice much appreciated, I have finally finished my treatment but for the past couple of months suffered really bad with my finger nails, they have nerve damage and sometimes bleed from under the nail, they also fill with poison, a couple got infected and the pain and swelling was horrendous so I had to have them drained and dressed, I lost my thumb nail the other day and think more will follow, I am still wearing dressings and soak my nails to try and release the poison, after all the chemo, radiotherapy etc I wasn’t expecting this, been so painful and difficult doing daily tasks etc with dressed fingers, has anyone experienced this and have any info regarding this, much appreciated, thanks

  • Hi Halley

Sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with breast cancer.  While I didn't have any problems with my fingernail ether during or after treatment I noticed that you haven't had any replies yet so I thought I'd reply to you to move you up to the top of the discussion.  Hopefully someone will be along shortly with an answer for you.

    Best wishes]

  • Hi Halley, I too lost my fingernails.  I finished treatment in Chemo in May and my nails starting falling off around August.  I noticed the new nil was growing underneath.   I wasn't in any pain, but my nails are back to normal now.  My toe nails are still brittle, but getting better.  Sorry to hear what you are going through, hopefully, it will pass soon. xx Jo

  • thank you for your reply, not a nice thing to happen, hope they grow back healthy, all the best xx

  • Thank you, hopefully grow back healthy, all the best xx

  • Hi Halley, sorry to hear you have had such problems with the finger nails. It sound very painful and scary. Can I ask what type of chemo you had that has had this side effect. Is there nothing your oncologist or breast care nurse could give you to help with treating them ?

    Hoping they heal soon.

  • Hi, I had the Red Devil one for 3 treatments then the Doc for final 3, I started to suffer with my feet and toenails at first and was told nerve damage and put on tablets for a month, then when I had finished chemo the problems started with mg nails, I mentioned it to my consultant and he just said takes time to clear if affected, my feet still feel spongy underneath, very strange feeling so I’m hoping all this will eventually clear, thanks for your kind reply xx

  • Hi Halley,

afraid I have nothing reassuring to add. I too finished chemo 6 weeks ago and before my last chemo proudly showed my oncologist my intact though grotty fingernails and eyebrows. She smiled sympathetically at me and said unfortunately SE’s can continue for a while after chemo has finished. True enough I have horizontal ridges on nails and right thumb nail has a vertical split going down it and I have cut it as short as I can.  I also have a very trendy eyebrow where it looks like I have shaved a gap in it! Neuropathy doesn’t help and sliced a thumb pad without realising. Sending healing hug and support x

  • Hi Halley

I was advised to use dark nail polish during chemo which finished in July.  Sadly, I ignored advice and didn't do that which is a learning curve for me.  I also had EC for 3 cycles and this was followed by Taxol.  My nails were ok until November when I noticed that 2 of them were turning green at the tip underneath the nail and it looked terrible.  One of my nails which was green had a ridge going across the  middle but the rest were ok.  I have had to cut 2 of them as short as I can and have now begun to use dark nail polish but guess it is too late.  The rest of my nails are doing ok and getting stronger all the time.  I think that it does take quite some time to get back to where were were before the treatment began.  Hope that you get rid of the pain etc it isn't nice at all.  The side effects are a real pain and sometimes worse than the treatment itself.  Take care xx

  • Thanks for your experiences, oh the joys!! Hopefully clear in time so I can have nice looking nails again xx

  • Thanks for sharing, your right the after affects are a pain literally but let’s hope in time we have lovely nails again! Xx
