I had a biopsy this week for breast cancer and three masses were found, including one in the lymph nodes. They haven’t waited for the biopsy results to tell me that they are cancer. I’m really struggling with the waiting game until my follow up appointment next week where they can give me further information.
The lady who did the biopsy told me the measurement of each lump, with the largest measuring 47mm. So it’s big. My question is…how accurate is the ultra scan or can it be potentially bigger. I know from pregnancy ultra sounds that they were quite often inaccurate. Also it is worse for the mass to be ‘fixed’. Also, as there was just one lump in the lymph node that I’m aware off, would she biopsy just one and not tell me if there were more lumps there?
Thank you in advance for any replies.
So sorry you are facing this. My lump was slightly larger on ultrasound than mammogram. Did she definitely do biopsy on the lymph node or just scan it. The radiologist at my scan said the lymph node looked ok but my surgeon did a sentinel lymph node biopsy. It all sounds so scary for everyone and we will all tell you the same, the waiting is the worst. Just know that breast cancer treatment is so good today and you will be in excellent hands. My friend got diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer 19 years ago, she is very happy and healthy. Keep strong.
I have lobular cancer. My ultrasound showed a single mass of 21mm but the MRI showed two others, when added together the three measured 44mm. I had surgery in November and went to get my results on Thursday and the one they said was 21mm on ultrasound turned out to be 55mm but the measurements for the other two was accurate, so mine were over 75mm, they were very big but lobular cancer likes to spread out. They didn’t identify any node involvement in either the MRI or ultrasound and that turned out to accurate.
Lobular cancer is very tricky to measure so if you have ductal, your ultrasound results may be more accurate. I had a therapeutic mammoplasty and the surgery was a doddle compared to waiting for the results. I had to wait six weeks for my results and in the end I was barely functioning. Waiting is absolutely the worst thing but there is lots of support on here. Good luck.
Hi, sorry to hear you're going through this. As everyone else has said, waiting is the worst. I found once I had the treatment plan I could cope much better. For me the ultrasound was more accurate than the mammogram, it showed a 55mm lump. My only way to mange the frustration of waiting was to keep myself really busy, both at work and at home to try and keep distracted and that mostly helped. Best wishes
Thank you. The waiting is very hard and the timing is terrible. I know it must be awful at anytime of year but I have two young children and I’m trying to keep Christmas plans as normal without telling family.
Yes, the time of year makes it so much harder somehow, and if you haven't told your family then that adds some pressure. Of course you're still waiting for the biopsy results, but many breast cancers these days are incredibly treatable and cancer treatment itself is so much better and more personalised than eve before.
I hope you can keep yourself busy with Christmas and try to put your worries aside from time to time. A colleague of mine describes putting her negative thoughts “in a box on a high shelf” which always makes me smile when I try to do that. Best wishes
