Hi, After suffering back ache and shoulder pain for some considerable time, I decided to have a breast reduction, I had the op end of September, the surgeon sent the tissue for testing, and a few weeks ago during an appointment to have the dressings changed, I was so shocked and devastated to be diagnosed with 10cm DCIS on the left side. I had a mammogram in June 2021 and it showed nothing.  I have to have a mastectomy and (currently debating) reconstruction surgery. But unfortunately at the moment I cannot have the surgery as the reduction surgery wounds are not healed.  It’s taking a long time as the reduction was so big H - C cup. I have been backwards and forwards to hospital, trying to speed up the healing, as I need to have a mammogram on the right side as, whilst there was none found in what they took away, they obviously need to check for cancer on the right side, but I can’t have this until it’s all healed.  I also have to have a sentinel Lymph node biopsy to check that it hasn’t spread beyond the breast,  which the surgeon is trying to organise asap.   So at the moment I don’t know whether I am coming or going, or when appointments/surgery is going to be. I have seen the reconstruction surgeon already about a DIEP reconstruction and am seeing him again on 8th December,  I have read through some of the messages on here and am now more drawn towards having the reconstruction, but if they find cancer in the right side and have to have a double mastectomy I’m not so sure about having a double reconstruction, has anyone had a double DIEP reconstruction and can tell me how it was? Sounds like such a big op with a long recovery.  Thank you.

  • Hi. Sorry to hear that you are facing all of this.  I haven’t had reconstruction so can’t help you on that score but someone will respond soon I am sure. Many cancers do not show up on mammogram so it doesn’t necessarily mean that the cancer is fast growing. I think bigger, more dense boobs are trickier to find lumps on mammograms.  Everything sounds so alarming when you first get diagnosed but rest assured now you are in the system you will be well looked after. I have a friend who had a grade four cancer treated in her breast 19 years ago, still fit and healthy at 72. I wonder if exposing your wound to fresh air for say 30 to 60 minutes a day might help it heal quicker. I am a great believer in the fresh air treatment for wounds. Maybe when you wake each morning you could try that. Hope all goes well. Keep us posted.

  • Thanks for your message, I do feel well looked after, it’s all just quite overwhelming at the moment.  I have had a pico7 for 14 days, and that has certainly helped the healing process, seeing my surgeon and nurse every Friday, and they have now told me to shower everyday, let water run over the wounds, then use a hairdryer on cool to dry them, then expose to the air for half hour then redress with Inadine.  Added complication is that it now appears  I’m allergic to the adhesive in dressings, so the pico  caused some addition blisters to form….. sigh….. I think my body hates me!

  • No it doesn’t! Just means you are super special and sensitive. Fingers crossed that the healing gets done soon and then you can start your next journey. Thumbsup

  • Hi Lanzigirl,  I am sorry to hear that you are dealing with all these issues and it is hard right now as everything is up in the air.  You will be able to move forward once you are healed.  I didn’t have reconstruction but had lumpectomies on both breasts as had DCIS low and intermediate grade right breast and stage 1 invasive cancer in left one.  I am small breasted (34A) so was nervous about the surgery too as wanted to be symmetrical.  I don’t mind having small breasts.  I was devastated when they found cancer in both breasts and I had radiation to both too.  I am doing very well and glad that I am on the other side of cancer now.
I know from reading posts snd watching YouTube videos that the DIEP reconstruction is a big operation and has a longer recovery than implants. but once it is done snd you are healed you don’t need to have anything else done.  Implants need to be replaced etc so I think it depends on your age, health, weight etc as to what you decide.
I am wishing you a speedy recovery so you can move on and get answers.  Take care and sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

  • Thank you for your comments, really appreciate that you took the time to respond. So glad you are doing ok, yes DIEP is a big op, it’s so hard to know what to do, I saw my BNS yesterday, and she is organising a zoom call with some ladies who have had the DIEP, I hope that helps me decide what to do, in the meantime I just have to wait to heal so I can move forward…….
