I really should be asleep right now as I’ve got to check in to hospital for my surgery in 12 hrs time but I can’t shut my thoughts off (I also have my 1yr old cuddling into me & I don’t want to let him go as I know I’ll not be able to do it for a few weeks following surgery)
After finally getting my HER2- result earlier this week I’m in for SLNB & lumpectomy. 1 minute I’m fine & glad the surgery is taking place so quickly then the next I’m terrified about what I’m about to go through. Never had general anaesthetic before (only ever had spinal epidural for my c-section) so really anxious about that aswell.
I’ve spent the last 3 or so weeks putting a brave face on telling everyone I’ve got this & I’m fine when I don’t think I am
Only positive I can think of just now is as I’m a later in the day surgery, I’ll be in overnight & I’ll get a better rest than I would at home with the baby.

First of all let me say what you are experiencing is exactly what we all felt before surgery. I remember my imagination ran riot and I had convinced myself that the cancer would have spread. I had the same op as you and felt fine afterwards, a little sore and bruised but better than I imagined. It is a bit of a shock when you first see scar and bruising but this soon heals. Now the anaesthetic is nothing to worry about. You will just be told when the aneasthetic is starting, it isn’t uncomfortable and next thing you know you are awake and it is all over. I always feel a bit high after anaesthetic and then the low kicks in a day or two later so be prepared, everyone is different. Hope it all goes well and before you know it you will be back home.

Dear Laura,
I was terrified of the general anaesthetic too, especially as I am very overweight, and asked every doctor I saw if I could have a local anaesthetic instead - I think they all thought I was a bit mad! It was actually totally fine, after all the anxiety I was asleep then awake in the blink of an eye. I had no highs or lows. The worst side effect was a very dry mouth for a few hours afterward (and the student doctor who took 3 goes to get the cannula in my hand).
You are getting treated quickly which is the best thing.
I’m sure it will go well,
take care,
Claire

Hi Laurabelle12, sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Good luck with your op today. Hope you can rest and sleep better after whilst you recover in hospital overnight and forward to seeing your little one in the morning. You can still have lots of cuddles with your little one just on the opposite side. Take it easy and do the exercises given these will help things heal and keep the muscle mobile. I wish you all the best for your journey.

Hi Laura,
Will be thinking of you today ️ Good luck with it all and rest as much as you can once you are home. I’m sure it won’t be too long before you can give your little one all the cuddles he needs.
My op is on the 1st December and I’m also feeling very nervous, please let us all know how you get on xx
Hi Laura, thinking positive thoughts and said a prayer for you. I think you will find that the lumpectomy is not too bad to recover from. Had 2 done within 3 months as had cancer in both my little breasts. Did not need SNB as over 70 and had DCIS in one and stage 1 invasive in other. All those hugs and kisses from your baby are healing and help you to have the feel good hormone prolactin released so hug away!!
Take it easy and so normal to be scared of everything. Anesthesia is wonderful as no pain or worries. Good your her2 was negative too.
Hugs to you and your little one.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes. Surgery done & all went well as far as I know. I got home about lunchtime Friday after the surgery late Thursday afternoon. You’re all right, nothing to worry about with the anaesthetic- 1 second I was talking about Xmas turkeys then next I was in recovery talking about Westlife & eyebrows with nurses haha.
Feeling surprisingly well and have much more movement in my arm than I thought. Got my exercises from the physio which I’m coping fine with too.
I guess that’s the proper treatment for this started, have an appointment next week for the results and next steps. Just need to recover from this so I’m strong enough for whatever is next.
