Diarrhoea

My mother in law is currently undergoing chemotherapy (Paclitaxel) and is really struggling to eat and has had severe diarrhoea for several weeks now. Does anyone have any advice on what she could do to control the diarrhoea or to keep hydrated and energy levels up? She is becoming very weak as a result and we are fearful she won’t be able to continue with this treatment

  • So sorry your family are dealing with this stuff, it’s so difficult! I found the Taxel part of my chemo so difficult that I stopped! I’d had three EC infusions that were really quite easy (for me), but I would suggest that your mother in law speaks to her oncologist or breast care nurses and explains her issues. She doesn’t need to endure horrendous side effects, there is always an alternative. We’re all so different in our reactions to each treatment. I think it’s always worth persevering with the treatment; to an extent! But she MUST get advice; she’ll be glad she did, don’t suffer in silence! Good luck xxx

  • I had the same reaction and was told to take Imodium, it's much cheaper to buy under it's other brand name of "Loperamide Hydrochloride".

  • I'm  having same problem terrible diarrhea  mainly fluid I rang the emergency number on the red card they gave me for advice. My nurse rang me back to tell me to come and have my bloods checked, I was very low on magnesium  twice. They gave me loperimide but didn't  help  so now I'm on codeine  fingers crossed. I'm  also on Docetaxel I couldnt eat didnt want to. I found all the ladies on here gave me great advice, just eat small amounts  throughout the day, bottle of water with ice cubes sips all day, I know it makes you weak, angry, tired but we will get there, speak to your nurse they are there for you, and your doctor. I found sucking an ice cube when i didn't  want anything was like nectar. Sending big hugs, xx

  • Oh poor thing. Have nurses advised? I was nowhere near as bad as your mother in law but was told to take Imodium and eat “white” food - rice, pasta, chicken - and avoid fibre….

  • This sounds very similar. Her magnesium is getting low constantly and Imodium not working. We are having to take her to A&E about once a week as she’s getting so weak and dehydrated so needs to be put on magnesium drips. We are trying to get her a regular biweekly slot for a drip to avoid A&E, she can then have one after the chemo and another during the week so fingers crossed they approve that. Have you finished your chemo now? If so how long did it take for your body to recover i.e. no more diarrhoea and normal bloods etc? Thanks for your advice.
