Constipation problems

Hi,

I'm starting my 3rd cycle of Carboplatin and Taxol this week.

Carbo has caused me constipation, Taxol not so much. The thing is I ended up in ER because of a rectal bleeding, they checked me and said everything was OK and gave me lactulose and more laxatives (I already was taking Dulcolax and stool softeners, plus prune juice, all-brans...I'm vegetarian so fruits and vegs are already on my diet).

This was 2 weeks ago, ever since it's a nightmare to pass stool, very painful, I always bleed (it's fresh blood), and I have haemorrhoids :( I'm doing sitz baths, using Anusol cream. The pain has reduced a bit, but sill bleeding. Nurses say I'm doing everything alright, but it's horrible. Every time I sit on the toilet, I dread it.

How you've managed with this? It's frustrating because it's the only side effect I'm struggling with.

Thanks

xx

Natalia

  • Hi Nnatalia22

Sorry to hear that you are suffering from constipation.  While I didn't have any problems with constipation I thought I'd reply to you as you haven't had any replies yet.  Hopefully some will be along soon with some advice for you.

  • Hi

    So sorry to hear this.

i had exactly the same issue post surgery and after taking miorphine, so distressing. I prescribed  constella 290mg ( tablet) hard capsule linaclotide

needed to stay by loo ( almost on it ) for 48 hours but the relief was amazing and that sorted it - just one tablet !

    i hope this helps

  • Hi Natalia,

I don’t know if this will help but diabetic gummy sweets have a laxative effect. So any big supermarket usually does some sugar free sweets (better if they’re gummy like cola bottles). A few of these would get most people going.

  • I’ve used Laxido regularly due to medications and will be continuing this going forward a crier my surgery. It’s excellent and takes effect after a few days of use - I started on one sachet morning and night and then reduced to once a day and it’s keeps things moving x

  • I saw a Tiktok saying to eat two kiwi fruit a day .

  • I love kiwi but usually eat one.  Very good fruit too.  What about steeed prunes.  Yummy too.  I have IBS diarrhea so don’t have constiipation.  I take acacia fiber for my IBS and it is great.  Oops I am off topic!!

  • Hi #Nnatalia

I am suffering from really bad constipation too.

Like you, I'm doing all of the right things. I'm vegan too so always eat lots of fresh fruit and veg. Using laxatives, drinking prune juice etc.

    Fed up with it

Hope it resolves itself soon for you.

    Best wishes.

  • Im really sorry for you, I know the problem. Im lucky to have it only for 1-2 days after chemo but for me it is one of the worse side effects. I will share with you my home remedies as I never use anything else.

Drinking a lot of water/herbal teas/juices. Im talking about minimum of 2L per day. And I mean it. It's not easy, I know, it means visiting toilet so many times during the day, but it helps not to have constipation. Eating prunes (dry plums) daily like 3-4 pieces. What helps for constipation as well and it is good for your stomach and guts - flaxseeds (add two tea spoons to 1/3 of hot water and wait when it will became gluey/ sticky and drink it first thing in the morning, read about flaxseed as remedy for constipation) Fermented milk products, which contain beneficial bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, are also recommended for constipation however I was told I can't eat those during my chemo so always check with your doctor.

You should avoid bananas, baked apples, white rice, potato puree, boiled and mash carrot, rice cakes, white bread - all those product are handy when you have Diarrhoea. Eating vegetables which causing bloating are not recommended too so try to avoid cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, onion, garlic etc.

Food recommended - drinking warm fresh juices, green tea, using xylitol, change white flour/bread to wholemeal, brown rice, buckwheat, wholemeal pasta, eat raw vegetables and fruits with every meal.

I hope it will help and you will feel much better soon.
