Chances of reccurance when still having Herceptin?

I have 2 Herceptin injections to go (chemo ended in Feb, radiotherapy in March). I'm also taking Anastrozole. I'm 53.

I had covid in April and since about May I've had extreme breathlessness and a cough. Investigated for long covid - I am asthmatic so well known to my asthma clinic. Long covid clinic can't say that it's definitely long covid, medics are still discovering how it's affecting people, but they seemed pretty sure. Chest x ray was clear. The only thing that helps my breathing is the steroid prednisone- I've had two courses since September. I spend most of my life gasping for breath.

Im back teaching fulltime and enjoying being back at work but the constant breathing issues are annoying and frustrating.

I saw my consultant on Friday for a check up and she picked up on my laboured breathing straight away. She's sending me for a CT scan.  Of course my mind goes to the worst case scenario. I know there's no use worrying about it, as the outcome will still be the same whether I worry or not.

At this point in my treatment, my thoughts are that I've beaten this cancer sh*t, not that it's possibly back - but who ever thinks it's going to come back.

  • Do you use a peak flow meter for your asthma so you know how you are doing?  What does your asthma Dr say?  It totally is exhausting to not be able to breathe.  Had asthmatic bronchitis before and needed prednisone too as the not being able to catch my breath was tiring.  Hope you feel better and it was good your chest X-ray was good.  I wonder if it could be from radiation causing pneumonitis.  Would have thought that would show up on X-ray.  CT scan will show more.  Take care.

  • Hi, yes I'm keeping twice daily peak flow readings. When I'm taking the steroids I'm at 460 or so, tonight it's 200. Not great.

The asthma nurses are pretty hopeless to be honest. I'm seeing one of them  again on Friday but I don't know what they will suggest. I'm hoping more steroids until I get the CT scan results. But that means 5 days of teaching.

    Thanks for your reply

  • Hi no advice but just wanted to say I much admire your return to work. I was a teacher and I know how very demanding a job it is and what in reality the hours are.  I worked a bit from home during the pandemic but when it came to a return the medical officer ruled against it because of the covid risk. I retired but as I was past retirement age and had basically planned to retire then it didn't matter too much. I missed not being able to go back, all be it, just for a term. If you aren't feeling well I would advise getting additional time off or asking for a temporary reduction in your working week. Plus have you thought of asking for a Hepa air filter in your classroom this helps with airborne infections such as covid, which your asthma and cancer treatment make you especially prone to?  Under the Equality Act, this should be seen as a reasonable accommodation.

    All the very best x

  • Hi jacala, I am wondering if it could be from radiotherapy, have you got your date for your ct scan yet. Sending best wishes xx
