Biopsy on calcifications in breast near cancer

I was diagnosed with breast cancer just over 2 weeks ago and at the time it seemed that I was fortunate that it is grade 1 slow growth and the only real downside was that it is hormone positive. So plan at present is lumpectomy followed by a week of radiotherapy. I've also stopped my HRT and may need medication afterwards.

I was advised that they needed to do an MRI and further mammogram to get more accurate detail before surgery. Today I had the magnified mammogram and afterwards was told I needed another biopsy on the calcifications in the same breast. This was done today and I will get the results when I meet with my surgeon again next week.

Has anyone else had experience of this? I genuinely scared now that if these are cancerous or pre-cancerous my treatment plan could alter significantly.

  • Hello and welcome,  Breast calcifications need to be checked out as they can be benign or malignant.  If you click on my name you will see I have had breast calcifications.

  • Thank you both for your replies. I had a look at both your stories which are quite different, which is what I've realised is a theme with breast cancer.

When I first got my diagnosis I tried to think positively about it, focused on the relief that my treatment plan seem quite straightforward. I maybe should have mentioned in my first post that I have a lump already which can be felt and has been biopsied already. The calcifications are an additional area in the same breast. So I'm now worried this will mean my treatment will be worse if any more cancer is found. Guess I'll find out on Tues 8th. I haven't even cried over it yet, just been tired and fed up with all the tests and travel to hospital.

I'm 51 years old and quite fit and healthy. A lot of people think I seem younger than my age. Started a new job a few months ago and while they are understanding and supportive, I don't really want to have a lot of time off. Another woman who works in my team has just returned from nearly a year off for the same things.

  • Hi JoSchmo,  Sorry you are dealing with Breast cancer but these ladies are great.  My story is pretty similar but was 72 at diagnosis.  In real good shape and no other issues with my health.  My bio tells it all but will give you a quick summary.  Had calcifications and microcalcifications in routine mammogram.  This was in right breast.  So had diagnostic mammo and then stereoscopic biopsy which showed DCIS.  Was Estrogen and progesterone positive too. Plan was lumpectomy followed by radiation and hormone therapy.  But surgeon wanted me to have ultrasound and MRI done on both breasts.  So off for testing.  Ultrasound was negative.  MRI showed two little spots on left breast and another small area on right breast.  Yikes!! The radiologist couldn’t do the MRI biopsy on left as I am small breasted and with the location he said he would have right through my breast so had to have surgical biopsy on left one.  It was stage 1 breast cancer and surgeon was able to remove the 3mm tumor and 6mm DCIS in that breast with clear margins.  It was estrogen and progesterone positive too.  I was an absolute wreck as I was debating whether I just wanted to have nipple sparing mastectomies with implants and be done.  I was not able to think clearly.  A real mess but after I got my act together I felt ok with another lumpectomy on right side snd bilateral radiation. The spot picked up on zMRI right breast was just fibrocystic disease.  I made it through and feel really good now and back to cycling etc.  On arimidex for 5 years.

I was on bioidentical hormones for 17 years so no more of that.  Oh well things change for sure but thankful that my cancers were caught early.

Take care snd good luck with your tests.
