I have been told today I am to have a week of radiotherapy after my lumpectomy which was 2 weeks ago.  How long did people wait to start their radiotherapy.  Especially if you are Leeds area.

  • Oh dear that does not sound good.  I really hope I don't go through the menopause again Tired face

  • Hi there, why do you need for 10 years?  You can do the breast cancer index test after 5 years do you and Dr know if the extra 5 years gives you any benefit.
I agree should be outlawed.  I am 73 and in Anastrazole.  So far not too bad.  Dry mouth and some sleep issuyon occasion.  Coping.

  • Hi Barbara

it is the advice of the oncologist who I have never met . The treatment plan was delivered to me by the breast care nurse.  I’ve met the radiotherapy oncologist . I asked him a few questions regarding my medication but he directed me back to the nurse. He did seem a bit negative towards the use of bisphosponates as not all cancer teams use them . I have a review with the cancer nurses in December so I will hopefully know by then how I am coping with them. It’s all bearable at the moment but the thought of years of ‘coping’ does daunt me a little. I will ask, as a matter of interest why some people are on 5 years and others on 10 years with the hormone inhibitors . Sleep issues are my main concern. I wake up at 4 ish and my mind starts working overtime.
I am going to make enquiries regarding acupuncture to see if that will help.
    take care xx

  • Hi there,

I am getting my radiotherapy 6 weeks after my operation. I have read the usual timescale is 4-6 weeks but I was a week behind as they had to re-check the histopathology. 2 weeks seems quite short but I’m sure it won’t alter the effectiveness of the treatment. I am from the Scottish Borders.

    hope it goes well,

  • Hi Poucha

Just thought I would let you know how my radiotherapy is going.I had my first of five sessions on Monday.I found it a bit more stressful than I expected but now that I am half way through have got used to the procedure. I would recommend  you to practice lying on your bed with your arms above your head and relaxing into the bed. It is quite tiring during the procedure and because mine was the left breast I had to hold my breath. Hope all is going well post op.

  • Hi, I had radiotherapy at Leeds. I finished 17 September 2021. My radiation oncologist is fantastic, I will always be grateful for her radiation plan. Excellent treatment. I had the planning appointment at about 8 weeks, I had a mastectomy and axillary clearance - you do need to wait for them to heal. Then treatment 10 days later.

  • So sorry didn’t mean to report this - slip of finger. Face palm♀️

  • Yes these differences in treatment always raise more questions.  Sleep issues are so draining and difficult to manage.  I know what you mean about your mind racing too.
