Zoledronic acid infusion

Hi

I had a zolendronic acid infusion a week and a half ago. It's because my dexa scan indicated I was border line osteoporosis and I'm on letrozole for 5 years.

The night after the infusion I collapsed on the floor and couldn't move. My sons and husband had to haul me up. I'd fallen twisting my foot underneath me so have a badly bruised foot.

I was really ill Tuesday and Wednesday. Feeling dizzy, terrible pains in my joints and headaches. I went back to working from home last Friday but still feel absolutely wiped out. I'm having a blood test next week and I had a chest xray as I'm also out of breath.

I wonder if anyone else had similar side effects. If so, how long did they last and did you find anything which helped. I'm currently taking ibuprofen.

I have another infusion in 12 months and am wondering if its worth it.

  • Hi Daiquiri,

Sorry you had a reaction to the infusion, I did as well. I fainted twice the day after the treatment, felt rubbish for a few days but then it got better. I'm having mine every 6 months so not looking forward to the next one!

I hope you start to feel better soon,

  • Wow!  That sounds awful. I do know biophosphates are pretty lethal drugs. Friends of mine who are married to scientists refused to let their wives take them for osteoporosis. This freaked me out when I was prescribed them three years ago for osteoporosis. They asked me to consider taking an annual infusion after I had decided to stop taking alendronic acid as it affected my joints and mood.  I was against this as I said there was no going back if I had a bad reaction to the infusiin so they offered me a monthly ibandronic acid tablet.I have been on that for about 2.1/2 years and feel fine. Maybe you could ask about trying tablets instead of infusion. Having had one fracture of my spine I know it is so important to have strong bones so it is a dilemma with biophosphates and hormone therapy. Hope you feel better soon.

  • Hi Lindsgab

I'm so sorry you had a bad reaction too and glad you have recovered. Its reassuring that despite having a bad reaction it will pass.

I hope yout next infusion goes better. When I spoke to the muscular skeleto clinic they assured me that subsequent doses tended to have much less side effects and that I can look at other options before my next dose.

I think the weekend will see me much better.

I'm lucky in that I only have a yearly dose.

    Fingers crossed for you xx

  • Hi Evajean.

I must admit I thought long and hard and got some super  unbiased info from the osteoporosis society which helped me decide to go ahead.

I have my next infusion I  12 months. The nurse at the muscular skeleto clinic will see me a couple of months before. I spoke to her last week as I felt so rubbish. She said we can decide what I want to do at that point, which may be to try a different treatment. So I'll keep your treatment in mind.

My mum fractured both her hip and spine so I think.i need some form of treatment.

From taking no medication at all, less than 12 months ago, I now feel like acwalking pharmacy.

I'm glad you are OK. Keep well xx

  • I know how you feel about taking medication.  Up to the age of 71 I was not taking any medication. Now I take the ibandronic and anestrozole. The thought of taking these for another five years horrifies me. My husband has been on medication for years for BP, diabetes etc and takes so many daily tablets and never minds doing this but I hate putting chemicals into my body.  Xx

  • What a big baby I fell like after reading what happened to you -you poor thing.

I had the shivers and felt like I’d been hit by a bus for two days but was perfectly fine after that.

I hope your next one is much better, I have another one in January xxx

its definitely worth it though, keep going, stay strong xx

  • I hope I get away with a mild reaction 1 st  infusion on 8th Nov, getting nervous, I know it will be beneficial but everything I have had has side effects & it starts to feel daunting

Hope your January infusion goes better.

    Best wishes x

  • I had my first infusion yesterday. Felt dizzy and nauseous this morning also shivers and bad joint pains. I've been told the "flu" side effects are usually only after the first one.  My next one is in 6 months so we'll see!!!

I was supposed to start Abemaclibib this morning but felt too nauseous, I thought I  might bring it straight back up. Ah the joys of BC treatments. Confused

  • So sorry to hear that, hope that passes quickly for you

Ive just started my second month of abemaciclib, so navigating through that !

    Yeah, it pretty rubbish

    Best wishes x

  • Hi Jaxs

I think I just had a particularly bad reaction. I hop all goes OK for your next dose xx
