I was diagnosed with grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma that had spread into my lymph nodes on 10th August. On 9th September, I had around a quarter of my breast removed with some skin, they did a chest cavity shave to reconstruct the breast and full lymph node clearance. My pathology report came back that my margins weren't clear, so on the 7th October I had surgery to reopen the wounds and take more tissue and skin. I got my pathology report last week and have been told my tissue margins are now clear however the cancer has spread outside the original margins of the tumour in my skin and I need another operation to try and clear my skin margins. As you can imagine I've been completely disheartened and cross. I'm due to start chemo at the end of November. I'm oestrogen positive and her2 neg.
Has anyone else experienced difficulty with surgical margins?
Hi Linda - I know how you feel. I have had 3 surgeries, and chemo and now going through radiotherapy. I didn't have to have an operation for skin margins but still, I needed 3 to get clear margins for my breast cancer. I am/was also Grade 3 Oestrogen positive and her2 neg. So really do know and understand what you are going through. Following my 3rd op results showed that a clear margin was achieved. All I can say is hang on in there and try not to be disheartened which I know isn't easy. Hope that you are ok and your final results are good when you finally get them. Best wishes.
