I am about to start chemo and have been given the details of local NHS recommended suppliers,  does anyone have advice about getting a wig and the quality of the nhs voucher wigs . Thanks in advance x

  • I just got one. It is absolutely brilliant. It's much better than my own hair. I wore it for the first time at the weekend and my niece didn't realise it was a wig. Only thing I would say is try on about 5 or 6 tis you get one you love and then choose your colour. Might be worth investing in a wig grip also to keep it in place as I found after a few hours it moved.

  • I had one it was darker than my own hair was but everyone thought it was my hair. I have met people who have embraced it and gone totally whacky with there choice of style and colour . Had I been younger I may have done that as always wanted to dye my hair purple ha ha . I am 66 and maybe past that now. I had to have my wig adjusted as I was in the middle of sizes med/ large. Large was too large so they altered it for me plus when I first went to see about it I had hair. They give you a little skin coloured skull cap made of similar to tights material which helps for comfort and fit.

I think you will like it try several designs. When at home I wore hats but was glad of my wig to go out and was lucky as my chemo ran from Dec to April. When my hair began to grow still wore it for a while but with the hot summer we have had I ditched it and went with the little hair I had

Takes some getting used to, wash it and condition it it dries overnight and it keeps it softer too.i did need the anti static spray if little hairs pinged up but all good .

It helps your confidence, Take care x

  • I think 66 is a perfect time to try out purple hair Blush

  • Thanks for your reply I am just anxious about if they look natural I suppose.  I'm nearly 60 so just want a wig that looks as close to my own hair as possible but I suppose I will find out soon as I'm going to see the wig specialist next week.  Do I need to get the voucher before going?.

  • Hopefully they will have sent it across but may be worth a call to check. You can do this I never thought I could but I have and hair coming back ThumbsupHeart️

  • This was my wig ThumbsupHeart️

  • I had a NHS wig which I chose in a similar style to my own hair.  It was very nice and suited me very well.  Much shiner and thicker than my own hair Blush.  I mainly used it when going out and meeting people. Only problem was that summer was bit difficult when weather became too hot, so I also got beautiful silk headscarf’s which I matched with my clothes. Now I am 6 months post chemo and hair is grown just enough for my first hair cut as sides are growing much more than top!

  • You need your prescription if you want to take one home with you that day.. You can get that from your cancer nurse. The wig I got retails for £329 , NHS cost to them is much less, it's not inferior quality wigs, just the NHS get a huge discount

  • I like the lace fronted ones as really comfortable. Get something that feels like you. If you aren't happy with whats on offer try somewhere else, don't settle.  Its always a bit tight when you still have hair, but will be fine once it goes. Artificial hair ones are usually supplied by the NHS. Its great because they are pre-styled and you literally put them on like a hat - so fast and no faff. Human hair ones need styling and are hugely expensive. See how you get on without a wig grip. If you need one you can get one from amazon. Also wigs can be styled to your taste too, so you aren't necessarily trying on the finished article.
