Lumpectomy with local anaesthetic only - am I mad?

I’m from a very high risk genetic background (not BRCA, but BRCA equivalent) and the decision has been made to remove a growing lump as they cannot seem to get an answer about what it is with biopsies (five needles and all were perfectly normal breast tissue).

I’m in the cancer pathway as there’s a possibility it is cancer and I’ve opted to have it done under local anaesthetic - am I mad?

The lump is 2.2cm and below my nipple area but feels fairly close to the surface - it’s very easy to feel.

I figured I could go home sooner and I won’t feel as grotty but I wondered if anyone else has had similar and how it went? Would you recommend it or avoid?

  • Personally I wouldn't.  I had lumpectomy and I went down to theatre at 3pm, back on ward 5pm and home eating soup by 8pm!!!  I'd rather be asleep as I hate the noises - I had large cyst cut out of my neck and I heard my skin cutting and the local anaesthetic going in took an age but it was by GP.

  • Hi Jesse,  For me no way. They gave me a light anesthesia and it went well.  Went home that same day and felt good.  Only took 1 pain pill that evening as a  precaution in case I had pain during the night.  I think you will be better with general anesthesia as they may have to position you and it may not be comfortable.  Talk to the anesthesiologist about your concerns snd good luck.

  • Thanks Barbara. I’m not concerned, it was offered as an option and I couldn’t see why not!  The positioning isn’t something I’d considered though - that’s a good point.
