Hello

Has anyone on Phesgo (trasuzumab and pertuzumab) had a large rash around the injection site?

What did your chemo team do about it?

Thanks

  • Had my last phesgo July this year. Almost every time I got a red mark around the injection site. Often this was extremely large, red, a little raised. Sometimes a little tender. I was a bit blase about it for some reason. I kept an eye on it but it disappeared over a few days. Never particular sore. I did point it out several times to the nurse at the next phesgo and showed photos I'd taken They seemed curious but not in any way concerned. No long term effects. Essentially I ignored it, which was probably very silly of me. However, if it had been hot to the touch, or if I had got a temperature of if it had persisted then I absolutely would have sought medical help and...I would think they would be concerned at that point. I found if the nurse gave the phesgo more slowly the red mark was less. As time went on and I got familiar with the procedure, each time I prompted the nurse to take her time as it hurt less. That seemed to help. Having said all that, if you have any concerns do seek a medical opinion. Always better safe than sorry

  • Thanks for your reply that’s very helpful.

Good you didn’t have any long term effects

I’m scared because I had anaphylaxis from the Paclitaxel day before yesterday.

I hadn’t known Phesgo could be given slower that’s interesting!

They gave me Paclitaxel before Phesgo on my first day on the medications which is the wrong order. Not sure if that’s why I got anaphylaxis the second time I had both.

  • If you have had anaphylaxis then I would definitely seek proper medical support just to be on the safe side. Takes photos of your rash to show them too! It's probably nothing to worry about but safety first always!!! Make sure you mention it too at your next treatment so everyone is fully aware.

  • Regarding giving the phesgo more slowly... My nurses were always super busy, rush rush rush. I realised if they did the injection quickly it hurt more and seemed to cause a bigger red mark. So I just adopted the habit of asking them not to do it too fast, take their time, ( smile, laugh) and not squeeze too tight. The nurse used to squeeze my thigh around the site of the injection. She had fingers of steel!! It seemed to slow them down. Then I told them... That's better. Bit of positive reinforcement. I think there is an actual time frame in the protocol specifying how long the injection should take, but I felt my 'team' were so busy they were just doing it as quickly as they felt they could get away with, so to speak.

  • 8 minutes the first time then 5 minutes is the injection time according to Genentech/ Roche

Sorry to hear your place is also ignoring the proper treatment guidelines and rushing it. Good you spoke up.

I also emailed Marsden to ask why they gave me the chemo before Phesgo when it’s supposed to be Phesgo first. That was weeks ago and no reply.  The nurse this time knew it should be Phesgo first but I was going to demand it anyway.

  • It's good to be knowledgeable... That way you can guide what happens. I've learnt that as I've gone along. Good luck going forward.

  • Will do

    I took photos yesterday.

I will tell them but the anaphylaxis was definitely the Paclitaxel how it happened. However I could also be allergic to Phesgo, just to a much lesser extent.

it’s comforting to know you had a large rash but nothing came of it. At least that’s possible in some people.

  • Hi,

I had red area after every phesgo injection which spread out across my thigh. I mentioned it but no one was concerned. Had my last one 6 weeks ago, it’s a bit weird now all treatment has finished.

  • The red/purple rash is pretty much standard as far as I can tell, I had my last one last week, got the huge mark in each occasion, it’s not an allergic reaction. As others have said the slower it goes in the better all round x

  • This is all great news!

can I just confirm, my rash is about 12cm x 10cm on my thigh

i am 5 foot 2 and 9 stone (to put the size in context with my thigh)

Is this the size you’re all referring to?

    What a relief it’s normal
