Just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Caught it early at a routine mammogram app.  My 1st appointment with consultant is 11th October.  What happens at this appointment.?  Roughly how long till surgery radiotherapy therapy etc.  Thank you.

  • Hi Poucha, so sorry to hear you have been diagnosed with BC and it’s good to hear you have been caught early.   I think wait times are different depending on where you live.  There are gov targets in place and cancer wait times are disclosed for each NHS Trust on the internet.   My experience has been a couple weeks wait between appts and a month from diagnosis (following biopsy results) to surgery.  I am still waiting on biopsy results following surgery, so can’t advise wait times for radiotherapy although I was told it would be approx 4 weeks after surgery.  The waiting is the worst but I used this time to get fitter for surgery and understand more about BC.   Routine mammogram 21st July and surgery 16th Sept.  Not sure how much faster private treatment would be and at what cost as I didn’t look I too this.  Hope this is helpful x

  • Hi Poucha, I’m guessing it is different for everyone but this has been my journey so far.  Like yourself I had my 3 yearly mammogram and a lump was detected.  I was recalled to the clinic where they performed a biopsy on the lump and also on the nodes under my arm.  It was about 2 weeks later that I had a call to see a consultant at the local hospital where she gave me the results of the biopsies.  Once it was established that I did have cancer cells I was sent for a CT scan to see if it has spread any further.  I had to wait for about 3 weeks for the CT scan.  A week after the CT scan I saw my consultant and arrangements were made for a lumpectomy and removal of some lymph nodes.  The surgery was performed 1 week later.  I am now just over 2 weeks since surgery and off to see my consultant in a couple of days.  My understanding is that I will start chemo 6 weeks after my surgery so in about a month from now.  As I said treatment plans will I guess be different for each individual but I hope this gives you an idea.  Blessings to you and your family xx

  • Hi.  It will depend on your particular health authority.  I was diagnosed 20th January, first appointment with the consultant 4th February, and had my operation 16th February.  The consultant will discuss your diagnosis and plans going forward.  My radiotherapy (5 sessions) was in mid-May.

    Best wishes.

  • Thank you.  Does everyone get a ct scan

  • I think it depends on your Health Authority. I had pretty quick appointments even though it was thought it was quite small. I had a biopsy taken at the same appointment for my mammogram and ultra sound because the radiologist had seen something suspicious. Results at appointment one week later and then booked in for lumpectomy/sentinal lymph node surgery three weeks later.I had my follow up appointment last week and have my first oncology appointment on 10 October. I am assuming radiotherapy will be towards the end of October or early November. The waiting inbetween appointments is the worst part for me. I found the operation ok, no problems at all.  Hope you don’t have a long wait, fingers crossed.
