Aside from being told I had this when went for biopsy results by the doctor saying when I sat down "Well as cancers go..." which shocked the life out of me, he also made it seem really minor and insignificant. However in the letter I later received it said intermediate to high grade. Does this have more significance? Its a really small dcis - less than 1cm!
Hi
I'm new to this but have found the discussions on this group very helpful during this very uncertain time. I take comfort from everyone's stories about this being a very treatable condition.
I had a diagnosis of DCIS intermediate grade following my first routine mammogram in June. I'm 3 weeks post-lumpectomy awaiting follow up results next week.
I'm no expert but from what I've read about grading, whilst still being contained within the milk ducts, intermediate and high grade DCIS cells grow faster than low grade. This site & breastcancer.org have lots of information about DCIS.
Have you been given a treatment plan?
Sending you love, hope & best wishes xx
Hi BluebirdxKaren
Thanks for your reply. I've been given date for surgery in 2 weeks, like you, lumpectomy. Hoping that will be it but won't know if radiotherapy needed I guess til histology results. Wishing you love and good news with your histology results xx
Hi, mine was small too 11mm. I've recovered quickly from the op was sore for a few days but stuck with the support bra day & night so just a bit achy on occasion now. My wound is around the areola & not too much difference in the shape.
Wishing you well xx
Hi Suzecab
I am 9 days post surgery. I was diagnosed with high grade dcis in my right breast towards the end of august this year measuring at 55mm (it was smaller on mammogram- this was post surgery measurements). My breast also had lots of areas of calcifications (over 20) in that breast. It was decided I needed a mastectomy on that side. Due to family history they also did a risk reducing mastectomy on the left breast at the same time- there was no disease in this breast.
My histology is back and being discussed at mdm today. All margins have been clear. Lymph nodes clear. No chemo or radio. No hormone therapy either (I have zero breast tissue so not needed). I’ve had expanders put in so surgery in 6 months to place permanent implants. But basically the worst is now behind me.
Dcis in intermediate to high grade means the cells grow more quickly than low and more likely to become a problem. It’s brilliant your team have moved quickly- hopefully you recover easily from surgery and it’s all good news from here. Lots of ladies with dcis on here.
Good luck,
Helen
Hi bluebirdKaren, good to hear such positive outcome. Keep on recovering xx
In May 2015 age 51 I was recalled from my first rountine screening mammogram for 2 areas of calcification (10mm & 5mm). After biopsy I was diagnosed with intermediate DCIS in the 10mm area only. The smaller area was benign. I had a WLE in the July and 15 sessions of radiotherapy in the September. 11mm high grade DCIS was final diagnosis after surgery.
