Surgery date brought forward by two weeks. Mastectomy was booked for October 4, but I’ve just had a call from the surgeon offering me a week today.
I’ve accepted it but it’s left me quite shaky, no idea why. Perhaps because I thought I had three more weeks to prepare and I have less than a week.
But it’s got to be done. So pre-op assessment on Friday
Any advice on what to wear to and from the hospital on the day of operation? I’m guessing just comfortable joggers and a really loose top?
Hi missmolly, yeah just comfy clothes is good idea. Front fastening loose top would be ideal for coming home just because you may have limited arm movement, although when I was discharged home I just came home in hospital gown and dressing gown maybe because I was so tired and sore I didn't bother changing but nurses were okay with that. Oh and the surgical stockings, you'll be given these to wear before your operation and to keep them on. You'll have drains in so you'll have dressings on. I put on front fastening bra but I had mastectomy with immediate implant so I was advised to fetch one. At your pre op assessment they will run through everything with you and your breast care nurse will do too.
Best of luck x
Hi Missmolly
I think that’s a good thing that it is sooner, I hate the waiting. Definitely wear something loose and comfy, probably something that buttons down the front so its easy to get on. I only had lumpectomy and lymph node removal so not sure whether you should wear a bra. I wore a sports bra which was quite comfy. Maybe contact the Breast Nurse for advice. Hope all goes well.

Shoes you can slip on and off as it’s not easy to reach down to do shoe laces or buckles. Joggers ideal as is loose button or zip up top. And a secret support cami worked for me - my other boob needed some support- get one big enough you can step into it and pull it up if it’s uncomfortable getting it on the normal way. And from bitter experience take a tooth brush and spare pants - despite all the reassurances that I’d be home that night I wasn’t and I wished I’d been prepared just in case.
Hi Miss Molly
Yes comfy clothes and loose top that drain can come out bottom of. If you can get a little shoulder bag for drain bottle this is a real help. I was out same day which was great but did fine shower next day tricky with drain. You get sorted though. Good luck take care x
Hi. I would say slippers and a gown for theatre and i wore goggers and a zip up hoody ti come home with a gillet over the top, all eady to get on and off and warm enough. I also got some button fronted pjs but check out asda post surgey pjs, i recently got a pair, they have bouttond down the front and pockets inside so would of been ideal for me to conceal the drain, only £10 and really comfy. All tje best xxx
