Swelling under arm after biopsy?

I'm already diagnosed with grade 2 lobular cancer with an affected lymph node. I'm waiting on more biopsy results as they think the affected area could be bigger than the 1.5cms. Grrhhh! I now have a small swelling right in the armpit and am wondering if anyone else had this after a biopsy? I'm worried it's another lymph node, which would mean it's spreading quickly. I'm mortified how long all the tests and results are taking and they cancelled my op once. By the time I have a new op date I'd have waited 10 weeks!

  • Hi

Sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed and that you have had delays to your treatments.

It is entirely possible that the swelling is due to the actual biopsy, but naturally if you have any concerns do give your team a call.

If it is of any reassurance, I was diagnosed with grade 2 IDC (intermediate growth) and grade 3 (fast growing) DCIS and the measurements hadn't changed from their expectations in well over a month whilst I waited for my operation.  I am guessing they have cancelled the first op. to carry out a further biopsy? I am sure they would not delay if they thought it was urgent, so it could actually be a good sign that they are not rushing to do the surgery, but carrying out more biopsies.   Do you know what grade your cancer is?

10 Weeks is an awful long time to be in limbo as waiting for the results is the absolute worst time of all the treatment - once you know what they are going to do it becomes less stressful - because at least there is a plan.

I will add that my cancer hadn't spread to a lymph node, so I totally understand why you are so worried.  Do contact your team to express your concerns as I am sure they will provide you much more information and hopefully reassurance.

    Kindest Wishes, Lesley

  • Thank you Lesley. I'm told it's grade two, so hopefully it stays that way following the further biopsy on other areas!!

  • Hi Cazza, My story is a little different  but I had DCIS and diagnosed in September 2021 with low and intermediate.  Well I went through all sorts of emotions and didn’t know what to do as I had stage 1invasive in other breast so finally after getting my act together I had a lumpectomy in February 2022 on right breast and it was low and intermediate grade 2.  I had already had lumpectomy on the other breast.  My breast surgeon was patient but his patience was running out and I remember he said I was lucky not to have an aggressive type of cancer.  Didn’t do a sentinel node biopsy as it was DCIS and not needed.

I don’t think you would be waiting unless they believed your cancer would not grow that quickly.  I understand how you feel and give them a call and let them know how this is affecting you emotionally.
Hope you can get in sooner to ease your mind.
