Hi all

I am 70 years old . I have been diagnosed with Grade 2 Invasive ductal carcinoma. ER 8/8 and PR 4/8. Invasive tumour 39mm Whole tumour
55mm plus 1 node 15 mm tumour.
I’ve had my surgery 4 weeks ago . Left wide local excision in left breast plus axillary clearance and lateral cavity shave .
my onconyte test has come back low so no chemo advised .
I have been referred to the radiology department to start my radiotherapy treatment and waiting for a date.
I have been prescribed Letrozole 2.5 mg ( 10 years ) and bisphosponates 50mg .(3 years )
Unfortunately my arm pit area has had to be drained of fluid twice in the past two weeks 600 ml each time but last week nothing would
come out although it was swollen. My breast area was going red and warm. The BCN prescribed antibiotics for a
possible infection. I’m hoping they work as not feeling great at the moment.

My first telephone consultation with the oncologist is on Friday next . I will be discussing my treatment plan .
my main concern are the bisphosphonates. I am making an appointment with a dentist for a check up but do not feel
happy taking these tablets at all and will ask the pros and cons re taking them. Has anybody else had these doubts ?
I have looked at comments on here but wanted to ask the question. Really anxious about the side effects.

I wish everybody well and hope you are all dealing with the dreaded cancer as best you can.

  • Hi I have just began bisphosphonates started after having some lose teeth removed.Like you very apprehensive about the side effects especially as don't have good teeth. I began every other day for two weeks and now am on every day. I feel better with tablets as if problems can stop taking them where as infusion is in there to stay? Not sure if this is the correct way of looking at it? I haven't had probs so far but am feeling tired? I guess it's the side effects of all this treatment but it has to be better than cancer returning so just have to go along. I am on Letrozole too so watch this space. Good luck hope all goes well xx

  • Thank you .

I do have fairly good teeth but have not been able to get into an NHS dentist for a few years so no check ups. I’ve had to go private so hoping not too much treatment needed . I’m a very nervous patient with dentists so I’m hoping they are gentle and patient with me .

Good luck to you as well .

    Xx

  • Hi Nannaj

I haven’t started treatment yet. Booked for lumpectomy and one lymph node removal in three weeks time. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis three years ago so have been taking biophosphates since then. The first tablet I took was a weekly one called Alendronic Acid. I really struggled with this as it made me so tired, achey joints. I just felt awful.A consultant suggested trying a different tablet. I have been taking Ibandronic Acid once a month for over two years. No significant side effects. I had treatment on a cracked tooth before starting on biophosphates but no noticeable deterioration since and I go to the dentists every six months.  It is a real scary place when you start reading all the side effects of certain drugs but so far  I haven’t experienced any. Like you I had visions of my teeth falling out but so far all ok. Hope this helps you a little bit.

  • Hi Evajean

the tablets I have been prescribed are also Ibandronic acid, one per day so I hope
my experience with them is similar to yours.
    time will tell.
Good luck with your surgery and I hope you have a speedy post op recovery .
    Take care

  • Thanks Nannaj. It is all a bit overwhelming at the moment as it is only a week ago that I received my diagnosis. Like everybody else you just think it will not happen to you. At least at 74 I have been lucky to have avoided it until now. The really stupid thing is that I feel guilty for bringing all this worry to my family. Crazy I know. It’s the waiting that is so hard but I have a lovely husband who is being wonderful.  In the great scheme of things I am so lucky that it is not more serious. Onwards and upwards.

    Take care.

  • Hi Evajean

like you, I was overwhelmed because my cancer was picked up by the routine mammogram screening

only 8 weeks ago. It’s surprising how you learn to cope with each stage moving on but it is hard.

I also find myself apologising to my husband , who is 76 but working so hard to keep my beloved

garden tidy and the house , as I feel I am spoiling his life and put it on hold especially after our lockdown years.

He gets upset when I say it so I need to accept that for the time being he wants to do it , bless him.

I think you and me need to stop giving ourselves a hard time about it .

Good luck with your surgery and any future treatment .

  • Thanks Nannaj.  Yes we sound very similar, we are 74 and 75 so our husbands probably know us pretty well after fifty odd years together.  I know it will all be clearer once I starttreatment. Thanks for sharing.
