I have been diagnosed with invasive grade 2 DCIS left breast. I have already had surgery for a previous cancer, along with radiotherapy, so the only option is a mastectomy.
Lymph nodes are clear. Have MRI and CT scan booked for tomorrow.
I’m just looking for some advice really. What should I do to prepare for the operation? What will I need immediately afterwards? That sort of thing.
Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.
Hello Myrtle, ahh thank you so much for sharing. That heart cushion sounds fabulous ️
Hi, I had a mastectomy on Thursday so it’s early days for me. Everything went well and the pain has been minimal. I have more movement in my arm than I thought I would. My pain problem has been sleeping as I just can’t get comfy. I think the thought of it was worse than the reality to be honest. I was terrified when I arrived at the hospital. I agree with everyone about the heart cushion, it’s been a godsend. I thought I would be really emotional but all I feel is releif :) Trying very hard to take it easy and follow instructions.
One of the most useful things I took into the hospital was a power bank for recharging my phone & iPad . I found being able to FaceTime family was a huge help. I was only in hospital 1 night but it was 1.5 hours from home so had decided on no visitors (& I was determined I was only going to be in 1 night ! Lol ) To be honest I didn’t really want them . Also take some boiled sweets. My throat was very dry from where the tube had been in.
Wishing you all the best x
Thank you so much for sharing. It really helps. I will add boiled sweets to my list. Hope all continues to go well for you xx
I live in USA and have not heard that term before. I like that term, we just call them hard candies here and I like hard boiled sweets. Sounds healthier too.

Totally agree about the sweets. The heart cushion has been the most important longer term help but on a slightly frivolous note I really wished I had taken a packet of biscuits or similar with me. I ended up on the afternoon list so no food from 7am plus recovered really quickly (thank you anaesthetist Dave) so I was starving. They gave me some toast and jam for which I was very grateful but the morning ladies had proper supper and I was so jealous.
We actually call them sucky sweets in our house
Yes biscuits would be a good idea. And also some oranges. I kept a satsuma from my dinner and it was so refreshing in the middle of the night.
