Hi all
My wife had her masectomey on Monday. She had it in the same spire hospital were 4 months previously she had had her breast augmentation. We were looked after by the same nurses on the same ward were she had that.
We had nurses saying to us they couldn't believe she was back in there having one breast removed that they had only recently put in. I'm so angry at the original plastic surgeon who operated on my wife. She even pointed out the lumps and he didn't even recomend going to see the breast care team who were located in the same building!
I hadn't given a lot of thought to this prior to the masectomey as all our thought had been on just getting it out but it hit me hard as four months earlier leaving there she was so happy as she had always been mentally affected about her breasts after breathing feeding our two young children. She said the masectomy wouldn't off felt as severe prior to her augmentation as there wouldn't of been much of a breast to remove. It just feels even more cruel now.
I'm also concerned that the breast augmentation may have had some kind of worsening effect on what ever is in the breast as when she had the breast augmentation done the breast with the lumps had bleeding so they had to operate on her twice the same day saying it was a hematoma. I'm now not so sure as it was only after the breast augmentation the lumps felt bigger. If they had been that size in her original breasts she would of noticed it.
The hospital have recommended we make a formal complaint against the plastic surgeon so they can investigate his reasons for operating on her originally.
Which I will do but for now our focus is getting her through this as she will have the drain removed next Thursday and we will find the pathology results. Her original biopsy is high grade dcis and we clinging on to that but know invasive could be in there to. I just wanted to vent some anger as I feel we have been so let down firstly by the breast consultant who 2 and half years ago when she first felt a lump and ultasounder her said it was fibrous tissue and didn't conduct a biopsy and now by this plastic surgeon.
Putting her in the bath yesterday broke my heart seeing her break down with how she feel she now looks as well as her fears of what may come next.
. I told her how beautiful she will always be and we will get her reconstructed but we need to get what ever lays in front of us done first.
The surgeon told us that they only removed one lymph node I'm not sure why that would be as I thought they would remove more so if anyone would know why I would appreciate your words.
I also had to explain to our 4 and 8 year old boys about mummies drain amd seeing them upset about it and not understanding it hurts me alot.
Sorry for the long essay just need to get it off my chest as have no where else to do it......
Hi Bobbo,
I am very sorry this is happening to your wife and your family. I hope with time you can sort out everything that went wrong in the hospital. Please do make the complaint so that this doesn't happen again.
As for the lymph node: Whenever there is breast cancer detected, during the surgery, one lymph node called "sentinel node" will be taken out. This will then be analysed for cancer cells. If it contains any, more lymph nodes will be taken out. If not, it stays at that one. This is usually done while the person is still being operated on, so they do a quick cut in the lab and check for cancer cells - if there are any, they take out more there and then. Sometimes though, this is not done during the surgery, but later.
I feel not a lot has been explained to you, so I would like to remind you that you have the right for proper explanations. If there is anything the doctors say that you don't understand, please ask. It's important that you and your wife understand everything going on.
Also, there are breast care nurses and mental health professionals that are able to help you and your wife get through this. Also for your children there are people that can help them understand what their mum is going through. Make sure you get the help you deserve!

Hi Bobbo
I'm so sorry that you and your family have to go through this and there's no need to apologise for the long essay, if anyone understands what you are all going through those of us who have been through cancer understand. Even if you wait to make a complaint until all her treatment is done do write down everything she's been put through while it's still fresh in your minds.
Wishing your wife the best of luck with her pathology results next Thursday.
Best wishes to you all.

Hope your wife get's good results. I had high grade DCIS. No invasive cells found and no nodes removed as on original biopsy I had intermediate grade DCIS and no evidence of node involvement. I'm 7 years down the line now.
Oddly I'd always disliked my breasts, felt they were far too big for my body but when originally they said removing the DCIS via a lumpectomy I could have a reduction in the good breast I declined after consideration. I just thought why am I meddling with healthy tissue for vanity and if I was awfully lopsided after surgery I would look into reduction then. I'm lucky that there's virtually no difference so needed no further surgery.
