I had a portacath fitted in my chest last week and was told to remove the dressing from my neck a few days ago (the bigger port dressing is to be removed in a couple days). I was able to remove the dressing easily but it has left a really nasty layer of super sticky residue behind that I just cannot get rid of. It's been 3 days now and if anything its getting worse. My skin is constantly sticking to itself and pulling, which is making the bruised area hurt so bad. I don't think the heat is helping either...
I've tried water, soap and water, time, alcohol gel and nothing is helping. I'm wary I need to take the other dressing off in a couple days which is bigger and probably going to do the same thing.
Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions for a miracle cure to get rid of the sticky residue? I know in the grand scheme of things it's so trivial but I swear it is starting to drive me slowly insane!
Hi, try a little oil on it and gently wipe/rub off with some cotton wool after allowing a minute or two to soak. Baby oil and olive oil both work, although olive oil can be a little messy. Suspect any kitchen vegetable oil would do the job just as well. Rubbing alcohol is also recommended, but can dry out your skin, so I'd avoid this as your skin has been through enough. There are skin Adhesive Remover Sprays available, but I think they work better on dressings and stomas, as they can leave still some residue when dressings are removed. Distilled white vinegar is also said to work.....if you can stand the smell. Allow it to soak for a few minutes, then gently remove, although I think this is better used on things, rather than skin! Hope some of this helps.
Hi, yes, the first thing I thought of was baby oil, as SuziQ suggests. I once had a plaster on my knee that left some sticky residue. I used a dab of neat Fairy liquid for that, but if your skin is delicate and sensitive, then maybe not. Hopefully the oil will work x
I was t told to remove pressure dressing after surgery so was on for 3 days until I saw BCN. She to,d me to use baby oil on residue - my back was a mass of glue. It didn't work brilliantly at remong but it was less sticky. My go to for removing sticky labels is hair dryer or WD 40 but not suitable for skin
