Terrified of having chemo.

I haven't received my latest results yet from my last tests however I was told by a bc nurse that I will be having 9 rounds of chemo followed by 5 of radiotherapy. I have alcohol induced peripheral neuropathy from when I was a pub landlady 14 years ago. Even now I never touch alcohol and if I did I know for a fact I will pass out cold as my nervous system shuts down. I had to learn to walk and use a knife and fork again as the feeling in my hands and legs were none existant. I know the majority of chemo drugs are alcohol based and I will admit I'm absolutely petrified. I didn't feel this bad when I was told I had cancer. Has anyone else gone through this with similar circumstances.

  • I haven’t been in the same position  but I just wanted to reach out to you and let you know that you’re not alone. Also to reassure you that I didn’t experience long term neuropathy after chemo and hope that yours isn’t exacerbated, I can understand your concerns. Macmillan’s helpline is excellent and they may be able to offer you some support and advice. All the best x

  • Make sure the oncology team know about this, there are variants of the chemo drugs that don’t include alcohol and they will be able to work around it. Similarly not all carry the same peripheral neuropathy risk.

  • Thanks Anna12345 I hope that may be the case for me as even though I can walk and such now I still have no feelings in my hands and legs. I'll keep everything crossed that this may be the case. Thanks do much for taking the time out to reply hunni.

  • Coddfish thanks for letting me know about the variations of chemo. All I know for sure is that certain chemo drugs are like 40% and more alcohol content which would in effect do me more harm than the cancer itself as daft as it sounds. I feel a little more reassured by this. When I had my mastectomy and then node clearance a couple of weeks later I could tell instantly about the ethanol in the anaesthetic as I was weak and light headed for a week hence my fear. I shall be sure to stress this with the team and hope they come up with the alternative.
