Hi Ladies,

Sending a virtual hug, So I am currently awaiting my results from my biopsy

There's alot of course playing on my mind right now, but one thing that is really concerning me is my natural weight.

I have a BMI of 17.2 I have alway's since birth been slim, at 5ft 6 - 7stone10 in fact i have only just got to this weight in the past 4 years since hitting my 30s

I am really concern that chemo may not be as effective and be very dangerous for someone my size, as several studies have provided evidence that low BMI had a poorer outcome.

Is there any ladies on here with similar BMI or weight to myself going threw this that could possible give me a bit of peace of mind or even advise/tips?

  • Hi Zwebby88

While I don't have the same or a lower BMI than yourself I noticed that you didn't have any answers to your question yet so i thought I'd reply to you anyway.  Hopefully someone with the answer you are looking for will be along soon.

    Best wishes

  • Hi

All I know is that the dose of chemo is worked out on your weight and height. Sorry can't be more helpful good luck x

  • Hi Zwebby88,

My BMI is a bit higher than yours so I can't really offer any advice. But it did strike me that actually, maybe not so much for breast cancer but for other cancers, it's very common for patients having chemo to have a low BMI or be underweight as a result of the illness itself. In those cases I'd expect that chemo dosage is adjusted and maybe other changes are made. Chemo is very tailored to each individual patient in a number of ways, so your oncolgist should be able to advise on what is appropriate and most effective for you.

I hope someone in a similar situation can comment too.

  • Hi Zwebby88

I am also 5ft 6 and weighed around 8st 3 during chemo just slightly heavier than yourself. I was weighed and height measured before every chemo infusion as the dose is adjusted for your individual weight so I’m sure you will be fine . Good luck with your treatment.

  • Hi, I’m a similar size to you & have finished 4 months of chemo recently and would echo what others have said. The doses take into account your height & weight and they weigh you before every chemo session.

If you do need a mastectomy that’s where your size can make a difference - I was told there wasn’t enough fat on me due to my slim frame so would have to have an implant rather than use my own body fat to reconstruct. They handled it sensitively. I’d advise you to keep asking questions. Good luck x
