Hi
I've recently been given my Onco result of 68 so have been told that I would benefit from chemo. But it's going to be at least 4 weeks until I get to see an oncologist to find it what I'm likely to be facing. Has anyone on here had a similar result because it looks like this is quite high....
I had an oncotype score of 28 (as you’re probably aware 25 or below is the desired score to avoid chemo). They told me it was advisable to go down the chemo route, but it was up to me, as it was borderline. I don’t understand the “curve” from 25 to 100 as it must mean something , but not sure what! Anyway, I opted to go with chemo as I was already on the rollercoaster! I was prescribed 6 cycles, which is quite standard I believe; I managed the first three quite well, in fact very well (EC), but the fourth was Docetaxil and it knocked me for six! So I decided to stop after 4. They offered me reduced dosage, weekly paclitaxel or revert back to EC. But I’d already made up my mind. They said that the ones I’d had were beneficial and would likely reduce my chances of reoccurrence. I followed up with radiotherapy after that and am now finished. Forgot to say, I’d had a left mastectomy prior to all that. So I would suggest that chemo would be your best option with a score of 68, I know we’re all different, but I think the fear of chemo is worse than the actual thing. As my onco said; give it a go, you can always stop or change the prescription. Just go for it and you’ll know you’ve done all you can. The weird thing about this bugger is, we know we can sort it now, it’s the future problems we need to avoid. Best of luck, grit your teeth and go for everything you can cope with. You’ll do it, so many of us have. Best of luck, lots of love xxxxx
Thank you so much. Yes I think it's the unknown that's the scary/annoying thing. I want to know how many rounds... How intense.. How long will I need off work.. How bad will the side effects be... When will my life get back to normal. But I don't think there are answers... Everyone seems to have a different story
If it helps, I found EC (the first three) which I believe is quite standard, an absolute breeze, in fact I felt better than I did before. I think it was the steroid high. I continued to exercise throughout. They tell you about the side effects like they’re an absolute. I was terrified! But if you read the side effects from a packet of aspirin, they’d frighten you too. Just go in with an open mind, if you’re generally in good health, you’ll most likely be fine! Best of luck xxxx
Hi Nines
I found the docetaxal side of chemo easy compared to EC, so everyone is different. It is all hard but doable and you will get through it whatever the regime. They can reduce the dose or give additional meds or shop halfway through when you’ll have had a good bit of the benefit. You have more good days than bad and would probably be able to work around it to some degree if you really wanted to.
out of curiosity, did your onco score give further histology results such as ki67, ER and PR sensitivity? Just curious …or was it just a number?
thanks and all the best
