Cramps and muscle spasms... solutions please.

I persist in getting cramps and muscle spasms. Oncologist said these are ' orphan' symptoms. As in things that happen, they don't understand why... Following on from chemo. Occurs for no known trigger. In getting it: Daily in chest/ rib cage. At least weekly in feet. Monthly in hands. I was just trying on a new top and my forearm and hand cramped/spasmed and the arm and hand went out of shape... Painfully. It's sooo disconcerting. Plus it hurts too. I'm looking for suggestions for solutions, how to address? Any ideas?

  • Hi, sorry to hear this. I got occasional cramps and spasms in my legs, especially in bed. Stretching helped a bit, but mine passed fairly quickly, my advice would be to keep talking to your oncologist about this and see what else they suggest if it persists. Best wishes

  • Try drinking tonic water. Good luck xx

  • Thanks both. I'll give the tonic water a try. I suppose i ought to go back to the oncologist but it is wearing to have to keep organising appointments. It's never ending. I suspect the answer will be the same... Can't do anything... But often there are solutions out there... At least I'm hoping so. LOL

  • Try a magnesium supplement too - good for relaxing muscles an tension and a lot of people are deficient. Best way to absorb it is through your skin is sprays.

  • It's helpful to know this as I've been experiencing these for a few weeks now. Toes and calf will spasm/cramp suddenly, particularly if me feet are cold but I've had it in my hands, mostly my index fingers, strangely.  I'm also getting them up each side of my back as my muscles seem to tense for no apparent reason. I spoke to my Oncology Nurse this morning but she wasn't aware of cramps & spasms being a particularly side effect of the medications I'm still taking. A nuisance but I'm going to have to live with it while it lasts I suppose

  • Ask for a blood glucose test to check diabetes as it can be a symptom.  Pharmacist can do simple one , GO can order one that checks levels over 3 months .
