Hi everyone,

tomorrow I am seeing my surgeon to discuss the removal of my healthy breast. I have never felt ok about having one breast, and being lopsided and  for a long time I wished that I’d had a double mastectomy. A chance conversation with my breast nurse informed me that some women do elect to have this additional surgery sometime later. Has anyone done this? Was the second operation not as bad as the first? I had a drain and a huge seroma with the first, axillary clearance etc. I probably couldn’t have coped with a double one initially, having had 5 months of chemo, and later radiation and fibrosis  too. I got lymphodoema in the chest wall - did anyone get that with the second surgery please? Many thanks in advance.

  • I wish you the best and can understand how you feel.  Whatever will make you feel more comfortable.  I don’t think it is unusual to have this done but I am no expert.  Take care.

  • I have had a double mastectomy with breast reconstruction at the same time. I am very pleased with the result.  I am a BRACA 2 carrier and so had had  long conversations with my breast surgeon about options.  I then found breast cancer in one breast.  I wasn't coping with annual mammograms and decided enough was enough. I am now having chemotherapy.  The unaffected breast is healing slightly more quickly but not by much.  However I have been lucky that the cancer hasn't spread to the sentinel nodes.

Everyone's journey is different. Keep discussing all the options until you have your right solution.  Take care
