AIs and hot flushes - long term

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone had been on aromatase inhibiters for a few years or so and could share their experience with hot flushes and night sweats. Even better if you're now off them and can offer any insight into recovery.

I've been on zoladex for 20 months and exemestane for over a year. I have found everything has significantly calmed down, especially day time hot flushes, though I still get these multiple times a day. Night sweats are worse, I barely get more than an hour's sleep in one go and sometimes I have so many flushes one after the other than I can't get back to sleep.

This has improved with time and some days and nights are better than others. I am also having acupuncture and although this hasn't made a huge difference to frequency, it has made a significant difference to the panicky feeling and anxiety that used to accompany the flashes, and anxiety in general so I now find them much easier to cope with and find it easier to sleep.

My question is whether anyone has found the flashes to fade and go way while still taking an AI, or are they here to stay while I'm on that?

If anyone has finished their AI treatment, did they find the flashes went after that?

I'm considering stopping the acupuncture for a while and see how I am. I don't think it is going to cure my flashes and hoping the calming down of my anxiety will stay.

Can anyone share their experience?

  • HI

Just bumping your post back to 1st page as it's slipped down.

I've never had hot flushes on my tablet, Anastrozole, so can't help with answering your question - sorry!

    Best wishes, Lesley

  • I take a CBD oil tablet at night and that really helps me. You have to research brands carefully and choose a reputable one. It makes it much more manageable. I also take a sleeping tablet once every 2 weeks as I just need to sleep one night once in a while!

  • Hi, I am on exemestane and in my early 70s. I am not on Zoladex. I have been on the exemestane for over a year and although I don't get bad hot flushes I do get them since starting the exemestane. I often get a not particularly pleasant feeling in my groin followed by a hot flush plus sometimes just a flush unaccompanied by the groin experience. The flush is enough to make me take off clothing and discard bed clothes but nothing worse.  When I went through the menopause I got the rare mild flush, this for me is worse. The things I find most debilitating about the AIs are is the worsening of osteoarthritis and general pains in my feet making walking a problem, dry eyes and weight gain, especially around my middle.   Any miracle solutions are very welcome, so far CBD isn't helping.

  • That is such a shame that CBD does not work for you. Would you be open to asking your GP for a sleeping tablet to take once in a while ( they don't work well if you take them every day)? I take one every 2 weeks or when I am desperate. I am not sure about the joint aches and pains other than that others say that exercise and good diet can help. I wish I could wave a magic wand for you to make it better x

  • I have sleeping tablets too, I take them about once a month but I feel a bit flat the next day so try not to take them more often. I haven't tried CBD oil, is that specifically for flushes?

  • Hi Zephyr

Thanks for your reply, must admit fairly desperate regarding feet problems at the moment as it makes exercise increasingly difficult. Sleeping is not so much of a problem at the moment but when I really can't sleep I take hot skimmed milk with honey, 2 paracetamol and read until my eyes tire. This usually helps. I did have sleeping pills which like you I took very occasionally but haven't got the prescription renewed in over 6 months now.

    xx

  • It’s not specifically for flushes but seems to settle them down to a large extent for some women. For me, I have a 6 hour on/off night sweat and wake about 5am. With CBD I have 2 or 3 flushes most nights, but they are shorter. I just find it helps me, but CBD isn’t everyone’s thing x

  • It is all trial and error isn’t it? Have you tried heat packs to get your joints moving? I imagine you have tried almost everything. Have you tried changing brand of AI to see if that helps you? X

  • Thanks Zephyr, I'll look into it. I have a lot every night, but some nights are better than others!

  • I find my wrists are sore, but they have settled and now it is only when I am hyper-extending them. They stiffen up overnight, as does everything else, but that wears off with activity.

I have found my aches and pains get better if I move around, but it sounds like you're beyond that. For keeping the weight off, I run a few times a week. I have eye drops for dry eyes

I don't drink milk, but the paracetamol is a good idea for sleep, they usually make me a bit sleepy! I have valerian tablets as well, for when my mind is racing.
