Had my 2nd Herceptin injection today, alongside Cycle 5. Had 3 FEC, 2nd Docetaxal today. Really struggling with injections, hurt so much, made my cry.

Has anyone opted for these to be done via IV instead please? As have almost a year's worth (16) to get through. Jo x

  • The Herceptin via IV can take 90 minutes as opposed to 5 minutes for the injection.

I have my Herceptin injections done at home. The nurses know to warm the injection up a bit first and they do it really slowly. It stings a bit when it first goes in but it's bearable.

You need to tell anyone administering it to do it very slowly over 5 minutes.

I'm half way through mine. 9 to go

  • The first 2 have been given really, really slowly. In fact they kept stopping and starting. They've both been out of the fridge for some time too. Feel like a right wuss about this. Finding them absolutely unbearable, even compared to veins playing up, blowing etc, resting of cannulas etc. Jo x

  • It does sound really sensible to ask for them IV. In the grand scheme of things an hour on an IV is not very long, and the treatment for your breast cancer has to be bearable for you. Just go ahead and ask as it sounds like a good idea for you xxx

  • Hi

I found that it was better once chemo was finished and was getting Herceptin on its own .
As already said it needs to be warmed up so I asked to be given phial before hand and would rub it between palms . I also used to rub thigh .

Unless the nurse is a expert ( miracle worker ) it will sting on entrance at that point they can readjust angle slightly If it agony

if it continues to be too painful do not be worried about telling them to slow down it really helps . Not a jab more like mini infusion over 5mins

One step at a time and ...Breathe !
