Sorry, I've put this in the wrong place til now... Was diagnosed with Breast Cancer end of March. Had surgery to remove tumour and a lympth node just over three weeks ago. Stage 1, T2, Grade 3. Ductal Carcinoma Invasive, oestrogen receptive, Her2 positive. Have had confirmation the whole tumour was removed and no sign of spread to lymph node. HOWEVER, I have been told I need Herceptin, Chemo, Radiotherapy, hormonal therapy. My body doesn't cope well with any kind of chemicals/medications. The strongest pain killer I can take is ibuprofen. Everything else makes me really sick. I don't want Herceptin or Chemo and don't understand why I need it if the tumour has been fully removed and hadn't spread. Am waiting for appointment with oncologist probably in two weeks. Am scared, confused, anxious.
Anyone else been in this position? What did you do? How did you come to a decision as to what treatment to accept? Has anyone refused treatment with similar stage, grade etc? Any thoughts welcome but please be kind, unless you really suffer will side effects of meds you might not understand the issues I face. Thank you !
Hi Cheryl
Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
It’s perfectly understandable that you have those feelings as finding out you have cancer can be a scary time particularly before treatment starts.
The reason that your medical team suggested chemo is that it will help mop up any stray cancer cells that may have escaped detection and the hormonal therapy is to try and prevent recurrence.
It’s completely up to you whether you want to have treatment however If you do decide to try the treatment you can stop at any time if it becomes too much for you.
Explain to your oncologist why you are scared to have the treatment when you meet them.
Wishing you the best of luck with your oncology appointment when you have it and with your treatment if you do decide to go ahead with it.
Best wishes
