Surgery Decisions

How do you even make a decision about which surgery to go for?  I’m high risk so a lumpectomy or single mastectomy will mean I’ll still have the risk, but recovery time is quicker to move on to the next phase of treatment. If I opt for a double then the surgery is harder but my risk is reduced. I would want immediate reconstruction which again adds time to the recovery period

There are pros and cons for each option. I go from one decision to another and I really don’t want to make the wrong one.

  • I would think it's important to get the best treatment you can

to reduce your risk then you will have lots of time after and not have to worry.

Best of luck whatever you decide x

  • I don't know if there is a right or wrong answer, just what is right for you. I can see an argument in both directions.

I suppose if you go for unilateral lumpectomy and then have any chemo or radiotherapy, it should keep anything in the remaining breast tissue away for now. You can then have bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction at the end of all your treatment for this cancer. I can see an argument in the other direction too though where you have mastectomy and recon straight away so that its done. If you were to have radiotherapy though it might change the shape of the reconstructed breast/ cause some hardening of an implant and there is the longer recovery time from a recon too.

Were your surgical team able to give you advice as to which way to go? Whichever decision you go with must be ok for you or your surgeon would not have given you the choice.

Wishing you good luck with your decision and treatment xxx

  • I’ve not spoken to the surgical team yet. I’m hoping I’ll have a clearer picture once I get the mri results.

  • In my case we didn't discuss the operation and treatment until after the MRI scan. My consultant explained why she wanted me to wait and once she had the results she told me what she would do complete with a diagram. She really is an excellent consultant so I hope yours will help you.

The other thing which occurred to me is whether she's told you what type of cancer it is. My consultant told me mine is stimulated by oestrogen so I know I will have to have a course of oestrogen inhibitors.

  • Mine is stimulated by oestrogen so I’d be having hormone therapy.

  • I think it helps to know. My sister wasn't told what was stimulating her cancer. The good news is she was given the 5 year all clear last October.
