I’ve been on 1mg of Anastrozole for about 5 months without really any side effects but in the last few weeks I have woken up with a lot of aches and pains mainly in my feet, ankles and legs. Is this normal and is there anything I can do to ease the pain? Thanks

  • The first thing I would do is tell your nurse. As for the aches and pains, I found those wedges that keep your lower legs elevated in bed helpful. People sometimes use them to elevete a broken leg and I think they are available on Amazon, different shapes and sizes.

  • Hi. I am an Anastrozole and 4.5 months into a 5 year course. I have had joint pain and stiffness from about 2 months. Mine is in ankles/ feet and hips particularly although have some shoulder stiffness and hand pain also. I am hoping it settles as its quite debilitating at times ..I was told things should "settle" at around 6 months

I find being active helps and also, for me, accupuncture has been brilliant. Occasionally I take ibroprofen which really helps but don't want to take that regularly so will only take at certain occasions such us before my dance class. My understanding is it is due to decrease in oestrogen which can cause inflammation in the joints which would seem to support why ibroprofen and accupuncture helps as both reduce inflammation.

I did mention it in my end of treatment review and was told it was "very common unfortunately " and I could switch to another AI if its still impacting at the 6 months mark but the last thing I want to do is  go through the impact of switching as I'm sensitive to meds!

It does feel like I'm having more better days now but that might be because I've accepted that's how it is possibly ?

I hope yours settles as I know how it feels

    Best wishes

  • Oh that’s useful to know. I’ll have a look on Amazon. Yes I’ll contact the nurse. Thanks for your help.

  • Thank you for your kind words. Like you I’m not really keen to swap meds in case the side effects from the new meds are worse. I’ll try some ibuprofen.
