Hi I'm new to this it's taken me a few weeks to process   I had a wide local excision and sentinel node  on 24 th march I have a 26mm grade3 with low and intermediate grade  the 2/3 lymph nodes ER,8. And HR Neg.  I have oncology appointment next week and I was wondering if anyone  can tell me how long the wait for treatment is  and what the treatment is likely to be this waiting feels like it's taking forever

  • Hiya hope your coping the best you can. Really sorry I get really confused with all the numbers and abbreviations!!! I had grade 3 tumour removed last year July after diagnosis end of May......another wide local excision due to the margins not being clear in August.  Started chemo October another attempt at clear margins in Feb and have finally had a mastectomy in April now waiting radiotherapy. Have you been given a treatment plan? Or had onco texting, this can help determine if chemo is needed.

I found the waiting hard but to be honest the time between each procedure was either needed for healing or went really quickly. Once things start happening you find things move quickly. Good luck xxxx

  • Just to say after my first oncology appointment chemo started less than ten days later. There were various blood and covid tests to be done. Chemo was always same day but this may not be what you are having.

Also meant onco type test not text!!

    Best wishes xxx

  • My hospital has 2 appointments a week apart, one to brief you, one to try to get your consent. Assuming you consent, they will probably start you within the week subject to having a line fitted etc.

  • Hi thank you for reply. This will be my first oncology appointment. I had a CT scan ten days ago so will find results of that at same time  best of luck to you cc

  • I'm yet to have a ct scan.  Will need one to plan the radiotherapy. Oncologist seem to work quite quickly in setting treatment plans up or arranging medication. Started tamoxifen today. Other than first appointment before chemo all others have been virtual. X

  • I am a little unclear about something -- did they find cancer in the sentinel node? What does the, "low and intermediate grade" refer to?

Basically, if they have found cancer in the lymph node, they may want to do a full clearance.

Treatment will likely involve a hormonal component, based on the ER status, impossible to guess any further.

I hope your recovery from surgery is going well.

  • Hi yes they found cancer in two of the 3 nodes  It says grade 3 invasive ductile carsnoma with low and intermediate grade DCIS and micropaillary component  T,2 N1 M,0. Have no idea what it means butJoyery happy it's gone. I'm ,5 weeks post opp. And I feel quite well apart from the odd twinge and the need for the odd nap. But that's more old age Joy

  • Thanks -- now I get it! Slight smile

Here is the NHS explanation of grading and staging, including a lot of what you said just now.

Excellent about the good recovery! Odd naps are cool, cats of all colours here approve Wink

Waiting is hard for most of us here, let alone when it has to do with the unknown, such as right now for you with wondering what treatment the team has in mind. I hope the appointment is early in the week.

  • I had a CT scan prior to chemo, and then within 2 weeks of oncology appointment chemo started. It depends on what is needed to get. you the best treatment plan for your cancer. I hope the wait is short as that is the hardest part on this journey.
