' cancer free' status..... When does it start?

Hi. Posted in Tripple Negative group, but thought people here might know too. I had a lumpectomy and only found out my cancer was TN after biopsy of that tissue. Clear margins and no cancer in nodes or elsewhere, but did 8 months of chemo/ radiation as a precaution. I know 3 years ' cancer free' is a bit milestone for TN, but I don't know when they start counting that 3 years from. Does it start after surgery once it's confirmed that there is no evidence of cancer elsewhere, or does it start from the time active treatment is finished ( so, for me, that would be almost 9 months after surgery)

  • Good question. I'm commenting so that if someone else answers, I'll know the answer too. I could be very pedantic here and say as the foreign registrar didn't even mention the word cancer when she gave my diagnosis then have I had it! I'm guessing that after first mammogram which should be May for me, I will be classed as NED - no evidence of disease but I assume that as all the cancer was remove via my lumpectomy and no nodes affected too, I am cancer free. Who knows? X

  • I'd like to know this too. I had a lumpectomy on 2nd August last year so was I cancer free from then?

I've since had 12 rounds of chemo, plus radiotherapy and am still having Herceptin injections until December. Be interested in the replies.

  • I assumed it was after my lumpectomy, as that is when they removed the cancer and found no evidence of it in lymph nodes.

I had chemo first but even if I'd had it after operation, I would have thought the chemo (like the radiotherapy and zoledronic acid) would be to help prevent it coming back.

As your cancer was removed with no evidence of it anywhere else at time of surgery, I would have thought that when you would be counting from. But if you really want to know when that milestone is for your personally, then you may need to call you BCN or surgeon.
