Hi, I’m having problems with my wound after surgery. The surgery was on 7th February and initially the wound was healing ok then it started to weep a bit and it’s gradually got worse. I’ve been to see the breast care nurse who has been dressing it but this week it was weeping through the dressing so I changed it and almost the whole wound has opened up as though all the stitches had not worked. Has anyone had this problem. There doesn’t seem to be an infection just not healing up. Any ideas what I can do
Do pester your breast care nurse. That doesn't sound good at all. Ask to be seen again and ask what the plan is if this keeps happening.
Alternatively, phone your GP surgery as they may have a nurse experienced in surgical dressing.
Also you could phone the Macmillan helpline and speak to a nurse there. They should be able to offer advice.
There will be a Wound Care Service (sometimes called the Tissue Viability Service) in your area. They support people with non-healing or slow to heal wounds. My mum had a skin cancer removed years ago & the wound would not heal. I discovered that the nhs is sometimes poor to respond to this. I found her local service & they were very helpful. It might be worth finding out about your local service.
Hi Teresa, I did wonder if I let the air get to it it might improve. I’ve been to see the breast care nurses every week to change the dressing at the moment they are putting iodine on it as it supposed to dry it out. The most annoying thing is it was only a small bit that wasn’t healing and now it’s almost right across the wound. Going back on Tuesday so hopefully it will be a bit better. Unfortunately I couldn’t have my scan for planning for the radiotherapy cos it hasn’t healed so another wait for that now.
good news is it’s a lovely day so going to sit in the garden and read.
Hope your doing ok and enjoying Easter x
Hi
Hi Scoobs,
Sounds like what’s happened to me, Ive been going to the BCN every week and she’s redressed it and has been putting and iodine patch on it she says it’s slowly healing but like you I can’t have any treatment until it’s healed.
Let’s hope we both heal up quickly, sending hugs to you.
