Hi
I was diagnosed with invasive lobular and ductal cancer at the end of January and MRI confirmed that size of tumour was 16mm. Last week I had lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy. Recovering well but another anxious wait for results from surgery.
Not sure how I feel at the moment- relieved that the tumour has been removed but also feel a bit cut off as had no contact from care team since discharge - is this normal? I don’t need anything particularly from anyone in care team but just not sure what to expect next, if anything?
Thoughts and experiences welcome please!
HI Belinda. Sorry you find yourself here with the rest of us but it is a good place to ask questions. I didn't hear anything after my lumpectomy until my results cam through which took a while. You can always call the BCN if you have questions or concerns. Mine did ring once to see if I was doing the arm exercises. The waiting is the hardest thing. Concentrate on recovering from the surgery, put your feet up and ne kind to yourself while you wait. I hope your recovery and next steps go well xx
Hi Heaven2021
Thanks so much for your encouragement, definitely helps a lot. I am taking it easy, enjoying not being at work and indulging my hobby of knitting!
Many thanks again xx
Normally there is a follow up with the surgeon. Some hospitals prefer to wait until the pathology report is in, so that you can be given the results at the same time the surgeon checks that recovery is going as expected and all is well, other hospitals keep these two issues separate, let the surgeon do the follow up regardless of whether or not pathology has already delivered their report, and let the oncologist tell the patient, at a separate appointment, what the report said and what the treatment plan is.
Because of the time frames involved, if the hospital separates the two issues, the surgeon's follow up is likely to happen first (many of them like to see the patient about two weeks after surgery.)
I have seen here some posts from ladies who said their results were given to them over the phone by their nurse, but I don't think this is common.
I expect you will be hearing from your nurse, or letters may arrive with appointment dates, soon.
If there is no contact after two weeks, I'd call the nurse.
