No scan after treatment

I was diagnosed with grade 2 HER- es and pr + IDC in August, I had no lump to feel, it was picked up on ultra sound. The size was unclear on the the ultra sound scan so I went for a MRI scan that showed a 2 cm area, along with other areas affected including a lymph node.

Treatment was left mastectomy and full lymph node clearance, 2 out of 17 had cancer. Because of lymph node involvement chemo was recommended X 3 of ER and x3 of DC. I had my last treatment 3 weeks ago, thank goodness. No radiotherapy as everything was taken away.

Seen my oncologist and she discharged me, offered no scans. I asked the question how do you know it's gone, how do you know it's not spread without any follow up scans. She told me my chemo was just precautionary and the cancer has gone, and sent me on my way with Tamoxifen that I have to take for 10 years.

Has anyone else just been sent away without follow up scans, I feel like I'm not trusting the process.

I am back at the breast clinic in May

  • Seems my reply has disappeared, last word not approved, sorry.

As I posted previously, I've had three CT scans in last 11 months.

    Panic over...

"A Harvard Teaching Hospital expert sums up the safety angle: “Radiation-induced soft tissue injury occurs at about 2000 mGy [equals 2000 mSv] and higher. A human CT scan produces far less radiation: the typical dose for a head CT scan is less than 70 mGy, and a typical body dose is less than 20 mGy. And since the body repairs itself, any damage (if it were to happen), would be repaired in less than one year.”

  • the radiologists are the correct people to work out the risks in each individual case as the radiation used is different depending on pts for example their bmi, where the cancer is so a article is only a rough guide not a rule.
the other reason for not giving repeated scans is a person has a scan it’s all clear in a months time they feel a ache or tenderness they want another scan so when does it stop? Also it gives people a false sense of security and then they don’t routinely examine themselves.
now whilst I sound like I am against follow up I am not I think there should be a standard one all pts get eg completion Ct scan in 6 months a appt with oncologist/surgeon with ultra sound then a Ct scan at a year.

That is good news Grin I wish I was offered a scan after treatment, just to out my mind at rest.

  • I'm actually halfway through but I asked this on my last oncologist telephone appointment about 2 weeks ago. a friend suggested maybe pay for a private one to put mind at rest. I do know exactly how you feel.....

    1. Hi Cjx, I had a 17mm lump, I had lumpectomy sentinel node was clear, diagnosis grade 3 stage 1, and told it was a nasty wee bugger with high recurrence which was discovered through a biopsy sent to America for an oncotype DX Score which came back 31, anyway I was told I'd have chemo and radiotherapy,  oncologist phoned me o Wednesday as I was having my second last Dc on Thursday, she said you'll be hearing from radiotherapy soon as we'll be discharging you coming up to last DC,  I asked what will happen next, she said you'll have a ct scan to see how things went then they'll decide how much radiotherapy.  I don't know if that's just fir the breast or full body scan, but I'll let yous know..

I was thinking I might do that.

I wish you all the best, and thank you

  • I feel exactly the same.  I didn't need chemo just lumpectomy, 2 nodes removed for testing and cancer had not spread.  Then radiotherapy.  Had my first mammogram which was OK.  I still get little aches and pains and my mind goes crazy, overthinking what if, what if, how do I know?  Still don't  have any answers.  Again don't know who to ask (breast care nurse not helpful).
