Hi folks well that's me 5 years down the line post Breast Cancer. Today I received my letter saying my last result was satisfactory and that I am now discharged from the Breast services.

I confess that I am unsure of how I feel about that. When you are on yearly screening you also have access directly into the breast services and that is no longer now available and I go back onto the routine screening of 3 yearly intervals.

Anybody else out there at this point in time and how are you feeling about it?

  • Welcome to the club.  I was discharged in Nov 2020 and it just so happens my first return to 3 year routine fell Nov 2021.  I had dreaded recall letter but it was to do with them wanting to check closer to 2015 as the screening unit I learnt has more detailed imaging machines .   Asked about private annual and doctor didn't recommend as he said most private hospital cannot do such detailed imaging.  He seemed genuine and told me any concerns to ring BC unit I was treated at and they will see me with GP referral.  Apparently my Healthy authority had decided this the best service for discharged patients to speed things up.  Might be worth asking your HA as when I was discharged at 5 years not told this x

  • Hiya,

5 years since I was dx last November - although still waiting to see surgeon to be discharged. I have had 2 appointments but both have been cancelled.

I have had yearly mammograms but I haven't seen onc for a few years. I remember my onc telling me when I was concerned about not seeing him again that basically once the door had been opened, it was always open if I had any concerns in the future. Fortunately I have not needed to contact him, but I have always thought that if I needed to, I would first ring up the bc nurses followed by the onc or surgeon's secretaries if I needed to before I went down GP route.

No idea if it would work in practise but it did reassure me a bit. I think I would have felt a bit abandoned otherwise!

  • I think private mammograms are just as good as NHS ones - they have to be as they have private breast cancer patients who receive all their care in these hospitals.  You can request a referral through your GP for a private bilateral mammogram if you like.

  • Hi Granny59

I had my first yearly mammogram last week and I'm waiting on the results which hopefully I'll have in about two weeks time or less.

    Take care
