Hi, I’m due to start radiotherapy next week, after which I would love to get away for a holiday somewhere hot!
is it generally ok to go in the sun when covered up, and how about swimming in the sea?
Sorry if this all sounds trivial but after the past few months I just want to escape from it all! Xx
Hi
The advice generally given is not to sunbathe for the first year. You should wear factor 50 sun cream and be aware when walking around in the sun as the radiotherapy covers a large area so wear round necked t shirts and dresses rather than v necks. Also be aware that if you have had nodal areas treated there may be a red patch on your back caused by exit dose.Sun exposure can cause the radiation reaction to reappear.
It would be fine to swim covered up in t shirt as long as your skin isn’t broken.
The maximum effects of the treatment aren’t felt until approx 2 weeks after finishing treatment so I would factor that in when booking a break away as you might feel uncomfortable getting hot and sweaty with sore skin.
I hope you find somewhere nice to go and have a lovely time x
